其中既有新泽西州 South Brunswick 的 Row for the Hungry 农场园筹得 10,214 美元、夏威夷 Kai 区的 Livable Hawaii Kai Hui 社区园筹得 6,707 美元,也有缅因州 Gorham 的 Seedlings to Sunflower 非营利幼教园筹得 8,525 美元。

Overview

SeedMoney is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Gorham, Maine. Founded in 2003 under the name Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI), the organization gradually shifted its focus from supporting home gardeners to funding public food garden projects such as community, school, food bank, homeless shelter and senior gardens, and rebranded as SeedMoney at the end of 2015. Founding Director Roger Doiron leads the day-to-day work alongside Board members Prajakta Patil, Jan Maes, Laura Miles and Laura Willett. Funding comes from individual donors, family foundations and corporate sponsors.

Mission

SeedMoney works to improve the health of people, communities and the planet by empowering public food gardens and farms to start up and thrive. The organization partners with school gardens, community gardens, food bank gardens, community farms and other nonprofits, offering online outreach training, custom-built user-friendly crowdfunding technology, garden planning software and small grants ranging from $100 to $1,000. The focus is on helping projects become more self-reliant in terms of food and funding.

Grant Programs

SeedMoney offers three grant streams. Challenge Grants are open to any food garden project worldwide and run as a 30-day group crowdfunding competition from November 15 to December 15 each year; participating projects keep 100% of what they raise and qualify for matching grants of $100 to $1,000 based on performance. Geographic Interest Grants award $150 to $300 with no fundraising requirement to projects based in Maine or the Global South. Planning Grants, sponsored by Growing Interactive, provide a free one-year subscription to the SeedMoney Garden Planner.

Tools and Reach

The SeedMoney Garden Planner is desktop software co-developed with Growing Interactive. It lets users draw vegetable beds, add plants, design layouts and generate a personalized planting calendar for their location. Since 2015, SeedMoney has helped more than 2,500 food garden projects across all 50 U.S. states and 68 countries raise the funds they need. Highlight successes include New Jersey’s Row for the Hungry donation farm raising $10,214, Hawaii Kai’s Livable Hawaii Kai Hui community garden raising $6,707 and Maine’s Seedlings to Sunflower childcare garden raising $8,525.

History

During its KGI years, SeedMoney built an online community of more than 20,000 gardeners from over 100 countries, led several high-profile campaigns to protect front-yard vegetable gardens, delivered a popular TEDx talk and ran the Eat the View campaign that helped urge the Obama White House to plant its first kitchen garden in 2009. From 2012 to 2015 KGI ran Sow It Forward, a traditional mini-grants program that distributed 440 grants and received more than 3,000 applications from all 50 states and 30 countries. That pilot informed the launch of the SeedMoney Challenge model and the rebranding at the end of 2015.
