Nursery Overview
Briggs Nursery, founded in 1912 and headquartered in Elma, Western Washington, is one of North America’s oldest and largest tissue-culture propagation nurseries. The wholesale grower specialises in micro-propagated liners, plugs and container plants for growers, garden centres and landscapers across North America and internationally, and has been owned by the Sidhu family since 2013.Briggs Nursery was founded in Olympia, Washington by Orson Briggs in 1912, originally growing small fruits and vegetables. In 1950, his son Bruce Briggs re-oriented the business around rhododendrons and woody ornamentals, and in 1965 Bruce Briggs partnered with Washington State University (WSU) to develop the first tissue-culture propagation protocols — establishing the firm as a pioneer in micro-propagation. In 1990 the nursery relocated to its present site near Elma, Washington on a 400-acre property of which 140 acres are in production. The facility now comprises more than 600 heated and unheated greenhouses together with open growing lots, and is supported by a 52,000-square-foot micropropagation laboratory and initiation greenhouse. In 2006 the company donated its original Olympia land to the local YMCA, and in 2010 it exited finished-container supply to retail garden centres to focus on liner production. It was acquired by the Sidhu family in 2013, resumed container production and re-engaged with garden centres in 2016, expanded C5/C7/C10 Emerald Green Arborvitae production in 2021, and brought new automation equipment online in 2025.
Plant Selection
Briggs tissue-cultures more than 1,000 plant varieties each year across roughly 76 genera and over 400 individual cultivars (per the company’s online plant catalogue), organised into four principal product lines. Ornamental and Native Grasses include Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’, ‘Lime Zest™’, ‘Lemon Zest™’ and ‘All Gold’, alongside Andropogon, Panicum, Schizachyrium, Miscanthus and Pennisetum selections. Small Fruits centre on Vaccinium (blueberries and huckleberries), with proprietary releases such as ‘Cabernet Splash’, ‘Cascade Jewel’, ‘Cascade Sunburst™’, ‘Scarlet Ovation’ and ‘Red Candy’, plus Rubus and Vitis. Native Plants feature Arctostaphylos, Pieris, Leucothoe, Gaultheria and other Pacific Northwest natives. Plants for the American Southwest covers drought-tolerant landscape material. Briggs Specialties — the company’s proprietary introductions and exclusives — include the Holden rhododendron series (‘Holden’s™ Red’, ‘Pink’, ‘Fuchsia’, ‘Peach’, ‘Pink Flare’), Michelia yunnanensis × hybrid ‘Fairy Magnolia® Blush’, Daphne × ‘Perfume Princess™’, Vaccinium ‘Cascade Jewel’ and ‘Cascade Sunburst™’, Nandina ‘Goldstream™’ and ‘Bonfire’, Cotinus coggygria ‘Velveteeny’, Sarcococca humilis ‘Fragrant Valley’, Gaultheria procumbens ‘Winter Fiesta™’, ‘Winter Splash’ and ‘Cherry Berries®’, Morus rotundiloba ‘Mojo Berry®’, and Fargesia rufa hardy clumping bamboo. The standard range also covers Azalea, Kalmia, Syringa, Magnolia, Phormium, Yucca, Calluna, Berberis, Epimedium, Carex, Buxus, Anemone, Hydrangea and dozens of further genera.
Quality Philosophy
The corporate philosophy “Quality that Grows™” derives from the directive “Start Clean, Stay Clean” — every key item used in production, from initiation in the lab to the growing range, must be free of pathogens or media that may host potential issues. Quality assurance relies on a comprehensive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) monitoring programme and on multiple in-house propagation methods — tissue culture, stem cuttings, grafting and seed germination — to ensure clean, disease-free plants. Compliance and certification work includes the P. ramorum Compliance Agreement, the Blueberry Shock & Scorch Certification Program, the Grapevine Certification Program, and routine C. buxicola (Boxwood Blight) testing by the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Production sizes cover 128- and 72-cell plug trays; L2, L3, L4, 18-Cell Tree Band, QR Quart Round and QT Square Quart liners; and C1, C2, C3, C5 and C7 containers, with minimum orders of US$2,500 for delivery or US$500 for pickup and a four-flat-per-variety minimum that cannot be split or mixed.
Market and Partnerships
Briggs is a wholesale-only nursery and does not sell directly to the public; its plants reach end consumers via partner garden centres, growers and landscapers. The company partners with hybridisers, other nurseries and commercial agricultural ventures worldwide to propagate, introduce and market protected cultivars. Since 2013 Briggs has been owned by the Sidhu family and works in close coordination with its sister nursery, Sidhu & Sons Nursery in British Columbia, Canada, forming a US–Canada production and sales network. In-house sales cover the USA across two regional teams (Bill Moyer for AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NM, OH, OK, PA, TX, UT, WY and Canadian BC and ON; Michael Lundahl for CT, DC, DE, MA, MD, ME, NC, NH, NJ, NY, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, WV and Canadian QC) plus independent field representatives. The nursery regularly exhibits at Farwest Show, Cultivate, MANTS (Baltimore), Gulf States Horticultural Expo, the Perennial Plant Association National Symposium, and the Northwest Landscape Industry Conference, and maintains active membership in the Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN) and other industry bodies.
