Hollingsworth Peonies is a family-run Missouri peony bare-root nursery established in 1970 and located in Maryville (Nodaway County), in the northwestern corner of the state. The farm was founded by renowned American peony hybridizer Don Hollingsworth, whose breeding work over more than five decades built the nursery into a recognized North American reference point for herbaceous hybrid and lactiflora peonies. Today the operation maintains over one thousand registered cultivars on the original fields and continues to collaborate with the American Peony Society as an ICRA-aligned registration partner for the genus Paeonia.
Founding History and the Hybridizer Behind the Brand
Founder Don Hollingsworth spent 35 years on staff at the University of Missouri before and alongside the nursery, where his extension work shaped modern peony-growing practice in the United States. He served two terms as president of the American Peony Society and received the AP Saunders Memorial Medal, the Bertrand H. Farr Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Dean’s certificate from the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. His introductions include the Itoh hybrid Garden Treasure and the herbaceous hybrid Command Performance, and he founded the Award of Landscape Merit evaluation framework still used today.
Climate, Soils, and Growing System
The farm sits in northwestern Missouri under USDA Plant Hardiness supervision and the Missouri Department of Agriculture, with all field work conducted under the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocol. Bare roots are field-dug only and shipped fresh, never imported, with each plant 3–5 years old and carrying visible flower bud initials at harvest. The shipping window runs September through November, the natural dormancy period when bare-root peonies establish best, and the nursery’s wholly domestic supply chain insulates customers from tariffs and international disruptions.
Product Range and Sales Channels
The current catalog spans the lactiflora group, herbaceous hybrids, Itoh hybrids, heirloom selections, and the Champion Class, with every registered cultivar carrying a Hollingsworth Best Peonies™ use label: BeeLoved (pollinator-friendly), Best Cut (cut flower), Best Fragrant (fragrance), and Best Landscaper (garden performance). The nursery serves both retail home gardeners and wholesale American specialty crop growers, cut-flower farms, independent nurseries, and landscape professionals. Six new 2026 introductions—including Gifted Sun, Edgy Magenta, Big Moon, Cheeky Pink, Sweet Millie, and Mother of Pearl Pink—are credited to D. Hollingsworth, J. Steininger, and R. Klehm.
Industry Position and Industry Collaboration
Every Hollingsworth cultivar conforms to the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), and certain introductions are subject to statutory Plant Breeder Rights or US Plant Patents under USDA PVP oversight. The farm acquired and continues to grow the Klehm / Song Sparrow peony germplasm previously maintained in Illinois, expanding its lactiflora and Itoh holdings. Don Hollingsworth himself remains a two-time past president of the American Peony Society and a central figure in the Heartland Peony Society and wider North American peony community.
