Beth Chatto's Plants & Gardens

Garden Origins and Ecological Framework

Beth Chatto Gardens lies in Elmstead Market, near Colchester, Essex, on a former fruit farm that ranges from dry gravelly slopes to a stream-fed boggy ditch, providing a rare combination of four habitat conditions within a single site. Covering about 2.7 hectares (7.5 acres), the garden has been developed since the early 1960s by Beth Chatto and her husband Andrew Chatto into five distinct planting areas that demonstrate the principle of right plant, right place under British low-rainfall conditions.

Gravel Garden and Drought Experiment

The Gravel Garden, planted in 1991 on the site of a former 0.3-hectare (3/4 acre) car park, became Beth Chatto’s most famous horticultural experiment. With naturally sandy, free-draining soil over six metres deep and a full-sun position, it has never been irrigated other than by natural Essex rainfall, relying entirely on plants adapted to long, hot, dry summers such as Stipa barbata, Hylotelephium ‘Red Cauli’ and Romneya coulteri.

Nursery, Propagation and Peat-Free Journey

Beth Chatto opened her Unusual Plants nursery in 1967, propagating unusual varieties by cuttings, seed and division. The current nursery produces more than 150,000 plants per year and offers over 2,000 varieties. After a decade-long transition, the team achieved a 100 percent peat-free potting mix in 2016, 100 percent peat-free seed and cutting compost in spring 2022, and 100 percent peat-free plug plants by summer 2024.

Education Trust and International Recognition

The Beth Chatto Education Trust, founded in 2015, runs a year-round programme of courses, workshops and community projects inspired by Beth’s ethos. Beth Chatto OBE VMH (1923–2018) won ten successive RHS Chelsea Gold Medals between 1977 and 1986, the Victoria Medal of Honour and the Lawrence Medal in 1987, the OBE in 2002, and two honorary doctorates from the University of Essex and Anglia Ruskin University.

Visiting, Tearoom and Community Events

The gardens are open to visitors from 1 April to 24 October (Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm) and from 27 October to 19 December (Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm), with a nursery, tearoom and seasonal workshops. Tickets, course bookings and the latest Beth Chatto Education Trust events are published on the official site, alongside plant lists and propagation notes.
