About the Group
The Historic Roses Group (HRG) is an international rose society founded in 1990 by members of the UK’s Royal National Rose Society (RNRS). It focuses on old garden roses: species (wild) roses and their hybrids, rare or unusual roses, and heritage cultivars that are no longer in general commercial cultivation but still deserve a place in today’s gardens. HRG remains a small, volunteer-run, member-funded group with subscribers all over the world, which keeps it focused on real historic-rose conservation rather than the latest commercial rose releases.
Aims and Activities
The group’s stated aims are: to promote the conservation, cultivation and distribution of old garden roses, heritage cultivars, species and species hybrids, and rare or unusual roses; to advance public knowledge of historic roses through publications, meetings, seminars and shows; to explore the history of old roses and encourage further research; to advise on the suitability of historic roses for use in the conservation, restoration and reconstruction of historic gardens and cultural landscapes; and to maintain links with similar groups in the UK and abroad. The group’s Patron is His Majesty The King (previously Her Majesty The Queen). HRG runs an annual programme of day-visits to specialist gardens in different parts of the country, learning courses and practical workshops, a week-long annual tour to UK and overseas rose gardens (recent tours have included the Loire Valley, Italy with a stop at Ninfa, and a planned 2026 visit to the Sangerhausen Rosarium in Germany), and an annual stand at major shows such as the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show.
Publications and Member Benefits
HRG publishes the Historic Rose Journal twice a year, with feature articles on old-rose history, cultivation and current research, book reviews, and reports on the group’s activities. The society also commissions a series of illustrated booklets by specialist writers, covering different historical rose groups and themes. Members receive the journal and the relevant booklets as they appear, and are entitled to take part in day visits, week-long tours, workshops and learning courses; to submit rose-care questions and receive tailor-made advice from experienced members; to swap rare cuttings and rootstock with other enthusiasts; and to take part in the annual general meeting and other society events. New members can join online with annual, five-year or life subscriptions.
Public Presence and Outreach
The HRG website works as a small historic-rose information hub: alongside the society’s own pages it carries “Top 10 starter roses” recommendations, the Chairman’s personal Top 10 each year, a list of UK gardens where visitors can see historic roses in the flesh, and a short history of the old-rose groups. The Hampton Court show stand, the UK day-visits and the annual overseas tour are the three most public-facing activities through which most non-members first encounter HRG. All in all, HRG is a quietly distinctive cornerstone of the UK and international historic-rose conservation world: not as visible as the big commercial rose brands, but absolutely central to keeping true old roses alive in real gardens.
Why HRG Matters to Gardeners
Historic (or “old garden”) roses are the backbone of many European heritage gardens, but commercial nurseries often overlook them in favour of more modern repeat-flowering hybrids. HRG plays a small, specialist role in keeping the conservation, identification, cultivation advice and rare-stock supply chain for these older roses going, and its journal and meetings are an entry point for anyone wanting to add real old roses to their own garden. For readers who are interested in trying a few genuine old roses, or simply in finding a reliable UK-based community of historic-rose enthusiasts, HRG is well worth a closer look.
