Grassy Knoll Exotic Plants is a small family-run nursery founded by Elizabeth Peters in 1998 just outside Portland, Oregon, with a long-standing focus on Passiflora (passionflowers) and other rare ornamental plants such as Protea, Clivia, Stapeliads, and South African and Australian natives. The nursery is widely recognized as one of the largest sources of Passiflora varieties in North America, currently listing more than 100 distinct cultivars and supplying universities and leading passionflower researchers worldwide. Over more than two decades, the nursery has grown from a one-woman propagation project run out of a home laundry room into a tight two-sister family operation that propagates, photographs and ships every plant itself.

Nursery History and Family Operation

Grassy Knoll Exotic Plants was founded in 1998 by Elizabeth Peters, who has nurtured an obsession with exotic plants since childhood, including an early fascination with Passiflora sparked by a drawing in a children’s book. After marrying in 1997, Elizabeth began propagating plants in the brightest room of the family home, the laundry room, and sold them at a local farmers’ market; in 2000 she opened the first online shop, beginning a mail-order business that has shipped live plants to plant enthusiasts across the United States ever since. Her younger sister Deborah gradually took on the technology, photography and website sides of the business, and in 2007 the two sisters together launched the current GK website. Today the nursery is a deliberately small family operation, with Elizabeth overseeing propagation, plant care and shipping from her farm in Rainier, Oregon, and Deborah managing marketing, photography, and the online storefront.

Passiflora Specialty and Rare Plants

The nursery’s flagship category is Passiflora, and it claims the largest Passiflora selection in North America, with more than 100 varieties propagated and offered for sale. To protect cultivar accuracy, every plant is grown and propagated on site; nothing is sourced from outside growers. Many Passiflora species are only sold after the mother plant has bloomed and been visually verified, which for some taxa can mean a multi-year wait from seed to listing. Beyond Passiflora, the catalog spans Protea, Leucadendron, Telopea, Clivia, Stapeliads and other asclepiads, succulent Passifloraceae such as Adenias, plus South African and Australian natives, Aristolochia, and tropical fruit vines such as Hylocereus. The deliberate emphasis is on rare, unusual, and collector-grade plants rather than mainstream potted flowers.

Greenhouses and Shipping Operations

Production is split across two greenhouses, a 30′ × 60′ main greenhouse and a smaller 15′ × 24′ secondary house, both located on the family property outside Portland. The shipping season runs from April 15 through October 31, with orders going out on Mondays and Tuesdays via USPS Priority Mail to keep plants from sitting in postal facilities over the weekend; during the off-season the nursery accepts orders and reserves stock, then works through the accumulated backlog oldest-first when the season resumes. International shipping has been suspended due to transit-time uncertainty, and orders are accepted for U.S. states and territories only. Most Passiflora ship as well-rooted 4″ pots, Stapeliads typically ship bare-root with multiple stems, and the live shipping calculator in the Shopify cart gives a real USPS-based estimate before checkout.

Gardening Community and Cultivation Content

Beyond the shop, the nursery runs a long-form content blog split between Growing Advice and News, where it publishes cultivation articles such as acclimation guides for newly shipped plants, beginner Clivia and Protea care, and an introductory guide to hybridizing one’s own Passiflora cultivars. The team is also active on Instagram (@gkplants), Facebook (the main page and the Passiflora group), and Mailchimp newsletters that announce seasonal promotions, including a recurring 40% fall clearance, a 15% discount for visitors who pick up plants in person near Oregon City, and holiday gift cards. The tone across the blog and social channels remains that of a small specialty nursery whose audience is collectors and serious hobbyists rather than mass-market consumers.
