A Dutch Flower Bulb Exporter Founded in 1894
M. Thoolen Flowerbulbs is a Dutch flower bulb export company, founded by M. Thoolen in 1894 and based in Velserbroek, Noord-Holland. The company describes itself as having over 125 years of experience in flowerbulb export, and it ships bulbs to more than thirty countries across Europe, the Far East and the USA. Besides its own labels, it packs bulbs under customer brands and supplies complete ranges to mail-order companies. Through international partnerships it also has access to production and distribution facilities in the United Kingdom, Germany and Hungary.
Four Lines of Business: Retail, Professional, Landscaping and Loose Bulbs
The work is split into four parts. Retail covers the complete range of pre-packed flowerbulbs, sold under four house brands or under a customer label, and also supplies mail-order companies. Professional sells flowerbulbs to professional growers who pot them up or force them. Landscaping serves public parks, landscaping projects and botanical gardens, with loose bulbs packed in boxes or nets of 250 pieces. The fourth line supplies loose bulbs to wholesalers and importers. For shops, the company offers wooden display stands, for twenty boxes, for forty boxes, and for twenty-four, thirty-five and forty-eight hooks, plus a pallet with open display boxes; the traditional way of selling is kept alive with showboxes, rackboxes and XXL flowerbulbs in wooden cases. Supplying garden centres, DIY stores and retail supermarkets has been going on for over fifty years.
A Packing Site of Some 20,000 Square Metres and Sixteen Packing Lines
The packing and storage area was purpose built and covers close to 20,000 square metres. It is fully insulated and heated, with lighting and fire alarms fitted to local authority requirements, and fans keep the air moving; one building is designed for the optimum storage of daffodil bulbs and onion sets. The machinery is sixteen Cremer packing lines, which the company says can produce up to 2.5 million packs a week, fitted with electronic counting and capper machines, and inspection belts run before the final packing. In a normal eight-hour shift the site turns out more than 320,000 packs.
Four House Brands, Spring and Autumn Catalogues and Gift Sets
The house brands are Elite, Holland Park, Flora Fantastica and Kieflo. Elite is the main range, holding more than six hundred varieties of flowerbulbs across autumn and spring planting; it is a premium range aimed at garden centres and more exclusive supermarkets, while entry level ranges are made for discount stores. Alongside pre-packed bulbs, the company still makes showboxes and rackboxes, and it offers complete planting concepts for the customer: collections for naturalising, for balcony and terrace, for the rockery garden, and in contrasting colours. Catalogues come out in spring and autumn, the newest spring edition being the 2027 one, in Flora Elite, Value and Gift, Marketplace, Holland Park, Flora Fantastica and Landscaping versions, while the autumn editions are the 2026 ones. Around Christmas the bulbs are also packed as gift items: bulbs in ceramics, amaryllis in gift boxes, narcissi Paperwhite in gift boxes, flowerbulbs in coloured bags, hyacinths in giftboxes and flowerbulbs in wooden trays.
Organic Certification, MPS Sustainable Supplier and the Dutch Bulb Quality Mark
On quality, the company holds SKAL organic certification under number NL-BIO-01, and is also an MPS-GTP sustainable supplier. It is a member of Stichting Keurmerk Bloembollen, the official Dutch quality control organisation for flower bulbs, and carries the Dutch Quality Seal that this body issues. Beyond that, packaging sizes and pallet display solutions are made to fit what a customer asks for.
