苗圃沿革

1947年，迪克·杰恩斯（Dick Jaynes）用4-H项目奖励的树苗在哈姆登（Hamden）种下了一片圣诞树农场。1984年，他与妻子莎莉正式创立断剑苗圃（Broken Arrow Nursery），将苗圃发展为全职事业。苗圃以康涅狄格州农业实验站25年的研究为基础，首批专精于山桂（Kalmia latifolia，即mountain laurel）培育。如今苗圃已扩展至约8英亩，种植超过1500种植物。

专业团队

苗圃现有约14名员工。总经理伯顿·杰恩斯（Burton Jaynes）曾任辉瑞公司高级主管，2007年加入苗圃，2018年接管日常运营。生产与园艺经理亚当·惠勒（Adam Wheeler）2004年加入，负责植物繁殖和容器/田间生产，曾获新英格兰园艺协会青年苗圃专业奖，并兼任纳拉甘西特谷社区学院兼职讲师。销售经理兼首席繁殖员雷切尔·康利（Rachel Conley）2019年加入，是国际植物生产者协会东部地区董事会成员。创始人迪克·杰恩斯是耶鲁大学植物学博士，曾在康涅狄格州农业实验站从事植物育种研究25年，主攻栗树和山桂。莎莉·杰恩斯则负责苗圃的财务管理。

History

In 1947, Dick Jaynes began planting Christmas trees from a 4-H project prize, establishing a thriving choose-and-cut farm in Hamden, CT. In 1984, Dick and Sally Jaynes founded Broken Arrow Nursery as a full-time venture, building on Dick’s 25 years of research with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, initially specializing in Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel). Today the nursery covers approximately 8 acres and offers more than 1,500 plant varieties.

Plant Selection

Broken Arrow Nursery is a major native plant supplier in the northeastern United States, specializing in Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel), Clethra alnifolia ‘Ruby Spice’ summersweet, Hydrangea, Rhododendron, Callicarpa, Lonicera, Viburnum, and other native shrubs and trees. The nursery also offers a wide range of herbaceous perennials including daylilies (Hemerocallis), hostas (Hosta), and ornamental grasses. The signature cultivar ‘Ruby Spice’ clethra was introduced by former employee Andy Brand and has become a garden classic.

Business Operations

Broken Arrow Nursery operates as a commercial wholesale and retail nursery, offering both retail store and mail order services. The retail nursery in Hamden, Connecticut is open daily from 10AM to 5PM. The nursery propagates and grows most of the plants it sells, making it one of the few retail nurseries in Connecticut that produces its own stock. Spring shipping closes in September; fall shipping resumes later in the season. The nursery also hosts Christmas tree cutting and various gardening workshops throughout the year.

Expert Team

The nursery employs approximately 14 staff members. General Manager Burton Jaynes was a senior director at Pfizer, Inc. before joining the nursery in 2007 and taking over day-to-day operations in 2018. Production & Horticulture Manager Adam Wheeler joined in 2004 and manages plant propagation, container and field production, having received the Young Nursery Professional Award from the New England Nursery Association and serving as an adjunct lecturer at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Sales Manager & Lead Propagator Rachel Conley joined in 2019 and serves on the board of directors for the eastern region of the International Plant Producers’ Society. Founder Dick Jaynes holds a Ph.D. from Yale and spent 25 years as a plant breeder and horticulturist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, specializing in chestnut and mountain laurel. Sally Jaynes manages the nursery’s financial administration.
