About the Nursery
Baumschule W. Kruse (Clematis aus dem Freiland) is a small family-run nursery near Westhoyel, in the Melle municipality of Lower Saxony in northern Germany. The nursery specialises in outdoor-grown (Freiland) clematis and other climbing plants; everything is raised outdoors rather than forced under glass, which gives the plants stronger winter hardiness and lets them be planted out at any time of year. The shop has been taking online orders and shipping since 1999, making it one of Germany’s first mail-order clematis nurseries. Alongside clematis, the nursery stocks a range of other climbers — climbing hydrangea (Kletterhortensie), campsis, jasmine and similar vines.
Variety Grouping and Naming
The catalogue is grouped by use to make shopping easier: bee-friendly types (notably clematis montana rubens), early- and late-flowering groups, long-flowering and repeat-flowering types, large-flowered hybrids, fragrant clematis, wild species, robust and disease-resistant kinds, easy-care selections for low-input gardens, container- and balcony-friendly low-growers, and Staudenclematis — the non-climbing herbaceous clematis that work as border perennials. The full alphabetical list runs from A to Z across eleven sub-indexes (A-B / C-F / G-I / J-L / M / N-P / Q-S / T-U / V-Z), each with a short paragraph explaining what the group is good for.
Standout Cultivars and New Introductions
Best-selling cultivars in the regular line include Clematis ‘Princess Kate’ (a.k.a. ‘Zoprika’), ‘Princess Diana’, ‘Arabella’, ‘Justa’, ‘Gravetye Beauty’, ‘Comtesse de Bouchaud’, ‘Westerplatte’, ‘Montana Rubens’, ‘MULTI PINK’, ‘KONINGIN MAXIMA’, ‘MON CHERRY’ and ‘SPIKY’, alongside non-clematis climbers such as Jasminum nudiflorum (winter jasmine) and Campsis radicans ‘Madame Galen’. The dedicated New Introductions page flags the latest additions and pairs them with notes on flowering window, hardiness zone, pruning group and suitable supports.
Garden Sundries and Plastic-Free Packaging
Beyond plants the nursery sells the kit that goes with them: 16-litre Root Pouch fabric planter bags in brown, Tonkinstäbe (Tonkin bamboo) climbing trellis stakes, Siapton plant immune-stimulant biostimulant, secateurs and other hand tools, and planters. The nursery moved some time ago to plastic-free packaging and Root Pouch fabric pots in place of plastic containers, putting it among the earlier German mail-order plant nurseries to do so. Customers can either order online for nationwide shipping or arrange to collect in person by prior appointment.
Planting Advice and After-Sales
The website doubles as a beginner-friendly planting guide: A–Z variety selection, the right kind of trellis for each type, pruning by clematis pruning group, feeding and watering, container cultivation, and special notes on herbaceous Staudenclematis. All articles are written in-house by W. Kruse and the team. Customers can ask questions by email or phone before and after purchase, with the nursery owner and staff answering personally about variety choice, garden placement and follow-up cultivation issues. The nursery’s two main differentiators are outdoor “Freiland” growing and plastic-free packaging. That puts it in a different category from greenhouse-forced mass-market clematis, and suits buyers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Nordic countries who want genuinely hardy plants. The customer base is mostly private gardeners, small landscape designers and balcony gardeners across the German-speaking world, and the nursery is well known in German clematis circles as a reliable small specialist for outdoor-wintered plants.
