History

Parc botanique de Cornouaille was founded in 1981 by Jean-Pierre Gueguen in Combrit, Finistère, Brittany, on a former pine-and-heath plot that has been transformed over forty years into an English-style botanical park. The site covers 4.5 hectares and today holds about 25,000 plants spread across roughly 3,500 species and varieties. It has been open to the public continuously since its founding, and was granted the official Jardin Remarquable quality label by the French Ministry of Culture in 2017.

Mission

Gueguen travelled for years to botanical parks and nurseries in Cornwall, Scotland, Wales, Japan, the United States and New Zealand to identify species suited to Brittany’s mild oceanic climate. The park is split into an upper acidic slope and a lower peaty wetland. The upper slope carries 2,000 azaleas, 360 rhododendron taxa, 380 camellias, 85 magnolias, 110 maples and a wide hydrangea collection; the lower 6,000 m² aquatic garden brings together water lilies, lotus, hostas, bamboos and large-leaved Gunnera in a very different microclimate.

Collections

The camellia collection is among the richest living holdings in France, covering the Laponicas, Higos, Reticulatas and Williamsii groups. The rhododendron range spans early-spring small-flowered species such as Cross bill, Clipinense and Moupinense, and extends to more than 420 later-flowering varieties in white, pink, red, blue, violet, yellow and orange. The magnolia assortment of 85 taxa includes both deciduous species (Cylindrica, Campbelli, Kobus, Salicifolia, Soulangiana, Stellata) and several rarer evergreen forms.

Research and Outreach

An in-park botanical nursery propagates mother-stock plants by cuttings, seed and grafts, and a selection of the resulting species is offered online to outside buyers. Gueguen also founded a museum of mineralogy within the park grounds, with holdings covering Brittany, France and the wider world; admission is free for park visitors. Every year the park welcomes interns, horticulture students and visiting researchers, making it both a conservation site and a teaching garden.

Visitor Information

The park is located in Combrit (29120 Finistère, Brittany). In summer it opens Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 and Sunday from 14:00 to 18:00; winter hours are reduced. The on-site mineral museum is free for park visitors, and the park’s own nursery lets visitors take rare young plants home to extend their own collections.
