The Growing World of Dahlias 由英国大丽花研究者、作家与讲师 Dave Bates 长期独自维护,站点托管在英国一台老式 Microsoft IIS / ASP.NET 静态服务器上,按 A 到 Z 排序的国际大丽花变种目录、世界范围内的供应商名单、英国及欧洲、北美、澳大利亚与新西兰的可购清单,外加一份按月发布的最新修订日志,构成网站的四大支柱。

A British Dahlia Encyclopaedia Maintained by Dave Bates

The Growing World of Dahlias is a long-running dahlia resource site personally maintained by Dave Bates, a UK-based dahlia researcher, author and lecturer. The site is hosted on a classic Microsoft IIS / ASP.NET server in the United Kingdom and is organised around an A-to-Z international dahlia cultivar directory, a worldwide supplier index, current availability lists for the UK and parts of Europe, North America and Australia / New Zealand, and a monthly change log. Dave Bates describes the site as an encyclopaedia of dahlias for gardeners, exhibitors and breeders worldwide, covering classification, cultivation, showing, raising of new varieties and historical botany. The site carries 13 sub-sections that range from plant botany and the cultivation calendar to naming, suppliers, registration, hybridising and archival articles.

Over 68,500 Cultivars and Some 4,800 Raisers Worldwide

At the heart of the site is the World Dahlia Directory, a list of more than 68,500 dahlia cultivars researched by Dave Bates with substantial help from the late Gerry Weland of California. The directory is described as the most comprehensive list of dahlia names available in the public domain and traces the history of the genus back to the early 1800s. The directory covers around 4,800 raisers from across the world, with entries that include a raiser code, name, country, prefix, ADS registration code and locality. Prefix and suffix dictionaries and a separate name-origin section are linked to each cultivar record, so a visitor can trace a single cultivar back to its raiser or scan a raiser’s prefix for the full set of varieties he or she has produced.

Fifteen Form Groups and Thirteen Colour Classes

The site documents the international classification of dahlias agreed at the 1962 International Horticultural Congress in Brussels and the 1966 congress in Maryland, formalised by the Royal Horticultural Society as the International Registration Authority for Dahlias in 1969 with ten form groups, expanded to fourteen in 2010 after a meeting with the NDS and the Dutch Dahlia Authorities, and extended in 2017 with a fifteenth group, Stellar. The current form groups cover Single, Anemone, Collerette, Waterlily, Decorative, Ball, Pompon, Cactus, Semi-Cactus, Miscellaneous, Fimbriated, Stellar, Double Orchid, Single Orchid and Paeony flowered dahlias, each sub-divided by bloom diameter into Giant, Large, Medium, Small and Miniature (with the Ball and Pompon groups using their own size bands). Colour is classified into thirteen classes covering White, Yellow, Orange, Flame, Bronze, Red and Dark Red, Light Pink and Dark Pink, Lilac Lavender and Mauve, Purples Wines and Violets, Blends, Bicolours, Variegated and Mixed.

A Year-Round Diary and a Full Showing Manual

Dave’s Dahlia Diary describes the activities required throughout the year to grow dahlias in the English Midlands, where the last frost is around 1 June and the first killing frost usually arrives in mid to late October, with winter temperatures dipping just below freezing for a few days each winter. The diary covers January tuber inspection and early propagation, late winter potting, spring planting out, summer stopping, debranching and disbudding, autumn lifting and dividing, and winter storage and soil preparation. The Exhibiting Dahlias section breaks the NDS showing process into planning, preparation and staging, with detailed notes on neck stretchers, polythene and umbrella bloom covers, bleeding hollow dahlia stems, the use of Bikini vases and OASIS floral foam, judging rings and the Classified Directory, and the special rules that apply to seedling and sport classes.

Naming Registration, Supplier Lists and Reader Contributions

For naming and registration the site links to the Royal Horticultural Society’s online Dahlia Cultivar Registration facility and lists the traditional email and postal channels for paper registration at RHS Garden Wisley. For supply it cross-references availability lists for the UK and parts of Europe, North America via Dahlia Addicts, and Australia and New Zealand, and gives direct links to the 2026 catalogues of dozens of UK and European nurseries including Avon Bulbs, Aylett Nurseries, Halls of Heddon, Withypitts Dahlias, JRG Dahlias and Shaw Green Dahlias, as well as seed-focused suppliers such as Kings Seeds and Chiltern Seeds. Dave Bates invites corrections, photographs and cultivar additions from readers by email and has continued to update the encyclopaedia on a roughly monthly basis, making it one of the longest-running single-author dahlia resources on the open web.
