Crazy 4 Dahlias

苗圃在 Instagram(@crazy4dahlias)与 Facebook(/crazy4dahlias)两个社交账号上同步发布新品种开售消息。

Nursery Overview

Crazy 4 Dahlias, LLC is owned and operated by John Spangenberg, located in Damascus, Maryland, USA, founded in 2002. The nursery’s tagline is “I’m Crazy 4 Dahlias R U”. It sells dahlia tubers online, runs its own breeding line, and releases a yearly catalog of new introductions.

The small garden in Damascus is not the most hospitable place for dahlias: hot and humid Maryland summers knock out many varieties. Since 2002, Spangenberg has focused on selecting dahlia that hold their shape in heat and can win at the show bench. The logic is straightforward — if a variety performs here, it should perform almost anywhere else. That direction has run through his 18 years of growing and exhibiting.

Breeding Focus and Society Roles

The nursery grows roughly 800 dahlia plants each year, and 95% of them are show varieties. Spangenberg is a Senior Judge of the American Dahlia Society (ADS), a member of the ADS Classification Committee, and serves as Director of the ADS Mid-Atlantic Trial Garden — the official ADS test site for the mid-Atlantic region that scores new introductions and decides which varieties make the ADS national introduction list.

Spangenberg is also a member of the National Capital Dahlia Society (NCDS), based in the Washington DC metro area and serving Maryland, Virginia and DC dahlia growers. Crazy 4 Dahlias and NCDS are closely linked — Spangenberg judges, classifies, and trial-garden-tests in both organizations.

Varieties and 2026 Catalog

The Crazy 4 Dahlias catalog carries many outside-bred cultivars, with relatively few self-bred lines — typical of small US dahlia nurseries. The difference is which varieties make Spangenberg’s show list. The 2026 catalog started going out from May 1, with 14 new introductions. The headliners are Rich Gibson’s “20th Ave Eyes” (BB, white with lavender center, 2026 ADS Lynn B. Dudley Medal BB division winner), “20th Ave Sangre” (M, velvety dark red, same Dudley M winner); Bob Romano’s “Windhaven Puff” (B, dark pink blend laciniated, dense petals) and “Windhaven Bob” (BB, dark red laciniated); plus six Hollyhill cultivars from Ted and Margaret Kennedy — “Dutchess”, “Sugar Baby”, “Cheerio”, “Little Moon”, “Royal”, “Rose Red 2” and “Calypso”.

Self-bred lines go back to 2014’s “Crazy 4 Wes” (single floret, Spangenberg-bred), later “Crazy Smalls” and “Crazy 4 Chris” (pompon, 2016 ADS Derrill W. Hart Medal). The 2026 catalog’s first self-bred release is “Crazy 4 Fluffy” (BB, pink laciniated, white center in cooler weather). Health and Virus Testing

Spangenberg started ADS virus sample testing in 2015 with funding from the Scheetz Chuey Charitable Foundation through the ADS endowment. Each quarter, mother-stock leaves go to the ADS lab for PCR testing; any positive line is destroyed on the spot — no exception for a good show year. Clean lines are split and propagated as commercial mother-stock for the next season. This protocol has kept Crazy 4 Dahlias tubers consistently well-regarded among US dahlia growers.

Day-to-day, every pair of pruning shears is disinfected between plants to avoid sap-transmitted virus — the main dahlia virus pathway. Cutting, pinching, disbudding, topping — all tools rotate through a bleach solution. This is standard in the show-bench community, but hard for a small home nursery to keep up year after year.

Sales, Shipping and Press

The nursery uses a “restock window” sales model: tubers are restocked once in mid-to-late April, then orders ship in sequence. The nursery combines multiple orders from the same buyer for shipping, but charges a $3 handling fee per order — clearly stated at the payment step. Buyers must open and inspect on arrival and email within 7 days for any concerns; after 7 days the nursery does not cover issues from growing conditions, weather, pests, or operator error. Six currencies supported: USD, CAD, AUD, CHF, GBP, EUR. Default destination is US domestic; export orders go via destination-post and customs. The nursery posts restock and variety updates on Instagram (@crazy4dahlias) and Facebook (/crazy4dahlias).

The Washington Post ran two feature stories on Crazy 4 Dahlias: first on October 1, 2014, by Adrian Higgins in the garden section, profiling the dahlia revival and featuring Crazy 4 Dahlias as one of the small nurseries highlighted; second on October 9, 2018, by the same reporter, following up on dahlia’s second spring in US East Coast home gardens. Both pieces introduced Spangenberg’s hot-climate breeding focus to Washington-metro home gardeners.

2026 update: the nursery restocked on April 17, 2026 at 8:00 PM, the year’s first restock window. Starting in April the nursery posts weekly growth updates on Instagram @crazy4dahlias, mirrored on Facebook /crazy4dahlias. Spangenberg continues as ADS Classification Committee member and Mid-Atlantic Trial Garden Director, also serving as judge in NCDS, one of the central people in the Greater Washington dahlia community. The nursery has no plans to grow into a large operation — “small and focused” is how Crazy 4 Dahlias has been understood for years.
