协会概览
加拿大卡尔加里月季（玫瑰）协会（Calgary Rose Society, CRS, calgaryrosesociety.ca）是加拿大艾伯塔省卡尔加里市的市级月季爱好者自律团体，1960 年 1 月由 P.J. Timms 与十名创始会员在卡尔加里发起成立，首任会长任期 1960-1962 年。1963 年协会章程获批，并于 1964 年 3 月依据《艾伯塔省社团法》（Societies Act of Alberta）正式注册为省级社团法人。协会以”促进和激发业余月季种植者之间的友谊，鼓励月季相关兴趣，推动月季种植改进”为宗旨，沿用二十一款（Twenty Eleven）经典 WordPress 站点作为对外发布渠道，是加拿大西部历史最悠久的月季爱好者团体之一。协会历任会员规模约一百人，会员遍及卡尔加里市与艾伯塔省南部，长期与 Calgary Horticultural Society（卡尔加里园艺协会）、Canadian Rose Society（加拿大玫瑰协会）及 Alberta Horticultural Society（艾伯塔园艺协会）等姐妹团体保持横向合作。
历史沿革与试验园
协会自 1960 年起在卡尔加里市内先后设立三处试验园：第一处设于 Glenmore Civic Nurseries（东南 14 街与 75 大道交界），与市政府联合种植九个玫瑰地块、约 300 株、35 个品种，以筛选适应当地严寒气候的月季品系、验证肥料与冬季防护策略；第二处位于 Reader Rock Gardens（东南 25 大道与 Macleod Trail 附近），1980 年代轻轨（LRT）建设时被拆除；第三处建于 1967 年加拿大百年庆典期间，位于 Confederation Park，选用”Miss Canada”玫瑰栽植 50 余丛。三处试验园证实”卡尔加里不能种玫瑰”的旧观念并不成立。协会自 1978 年起持续参与 Alberta Children’s Hospital（现 Richmond Road Diagnostic & Treatment Centre）、Cross House 与 Calgary Zoo 三处社区玫瑰园维护，其中 Alberta Children’s Hospital 玫瑰园一直由会员管护至 2007 年新院启用。
年度玫瑰展与教育
协会自 1973 年举办首届 Annual Rose Show，至 2026 年已办至第 53 届（2026 年 7 月 18 日在 Calgary Scandinavian Centre 的 Viking Room 举办，13:30 至 17:00 对公众免费开放），设 31 项奖杯与 127 个竞赛组别，含”Queen of the Show””King of the Show””Most Fragrant Rose”三大组别。该展赛传统源于 1969 年 9 月举办的 Mini Show（1972 年达到 64 个参赛作品后正式独立），1973 年首届即吸引 250 名参展者与 500 余件参赛作品，其中 Hazel Bennion 以”Lady Eglin”玫瑰摘得首届”Queen of the Show”。展赛历来获市长白帽基金（White Hat Fund）等本地企业赞助，2012 年 40 周年展由时任市长 Naheed Nenshi 出席。协会于 2004 年与 2012 年两度主办 Canadian Rose Society 认证评委培训班（Certified Judges），为加拿大西部小型玫瑰社团持续输送裁判人才。
会刊、图书与玫瑰图录
协会会刊《Rose Round-up》自 1968 年由打字机单页起步，1972 年经公开征名由 Innisfail 的 Mrs. W. Tester 命名，1987 年 Dorothy Gillespie 设计的艾伯塔玫瑰 logo 沿用至今，现以电子邮件形式每月发送会员。2010 年协会出版《Growing Roses in Calgary》专著，全球范围内被视作寒冷气候区月季栽培权威指南，全书 150 页、含近 300 幅彩色照片与插图，覆盖月季园设计、冬季防护与常见病害管理；售价非会员 20 加元，会员 15 加元（仅限市内自取，加市外需先联系the Society’s sales email 协商）。站点另设 Gallery of Roses 分类图录，展示可在卡尔加里生长的玫瑰品种，并以专题形式向新园丁推荐加拿大耐寒月季（建议每日 6 小时日照、酸性有机质土壤、至少 30 厘米深植）。
会员类别、活动与月季销售

Association Overview
The Calgary Rose Society (CRS, calgaryrosesociety.ca) is a volunteer-driven amateur rose society based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was founded in January 1960 by P.J. Timms with a charter membership of ten, with the first president serving 1960-1962. The constitution was approved in 1963 and the Society was incorporated in March 1964 under the Societies Act of Alberta. The Society’s stated objects are to foster and promote camaraderie among amateur rose growers, to stimulate interest, and to encourage improvement in all areas relating to roses. It runs on the Twenty Eleven WordPress theme, maintains approximately one hundred members across Calgary and southern Alberta, and operates as one of the longest-established amateur rose societies in Western Canada. CRS cooperates laterally with the Calgary Horticultural Society, the Canadian Rose Society and the Alberta Horticultural Society.
History and Test Gardens
From 1960 onward CRS operated three test gardens inside the City of Calgary. The first was established at the Glenmore Civic Nurseries (14th Street and 75th Avenue SE) under a joint city-society venture: nine rose plots were planted with about 300 bushes covering 35 varieties, donated largely by members and maintained primarily by city crews, to evaluate which cultivars survived the Calgary climate, which fertilizers were most effective, and which winter-protection techniques worked best. A second garden near Reader Rock Gardens (25th Avenue and Macleod Trail SE) was removed in the early 1980s during LRT construction. A third was planted in Confederation Park in 1967 as a Canada Centennial project with over 50 bushes of the cultivar “Miss Canada.” Together the test gardens dispelled the long-standing belief that roses could not be grown in Calgary. The Society also maintained three community rose beds: one at the old Alberta Children’s Hospital (1978-2007), one at Cross House (1978), and one at the Calgary Zoo (1992).
Annual Rose Show and Education
The Society has held its Annual Rose Show since 1973; the 53rd edition is scheduled for July 18, 2026, in the Viking Room at the Scandinavian Centre (Calgary Scandinavian Centre), with public viewing from 1:30pm to 5pm, free admission, and elevator access. The show awards 31 trophies across 127 entry classes, including the Queen of the Show, the King of the Show, and the Most Fragrant Rose. The show tradition grew out of a Mini Show first held in September 1969, which reached 64 entries by 1972 and triggered the Society’s own independent show. The inaugural 1973 show drew 250 exhibitors and over 500 entries, with Hazel Bennion taking the first Queen of the Show trophy with “Lady Eglin.” The trophy program has long received civic support, including funding from the White Hat Fund of then-Mayor Rod Sykes and contributions from local auto dealers and funeral homes. CRS hosted the Canadian Rose Society Certified Judges school in 2004 and again in 2012, training accredited and certified judges for Western Canada.
Newsletter, Book and Rose Gallery
The Society’s newsletter Rose Round-up has been published since 1968, originally typed on a Remington typewriter and run off on a Gestetner duplicator; in 1972 it was named through a public contest won by Mrs. W. Tester of Innisfail, Alberta, and in 1987 its current Alberta-rose masthead logo was designed by Dorothy Gillespie. It is now distributed electronically to members each month. In 2010 CRS published Growing Roses in Calgary, a 150-page volume with nearly 300 full-color photographs and illustrations covering rose-garden design, winterizing tender cultivars and disease management; the book is widely cited as the definitive cold-climate rose guide, priced at CAD 20 for non-members and CAD 15 for members (Calgary pickup only; out-of-town buyers contact the Society’s sales email). The site also runs a Gallery of Roses that profiles varieties successfully grown in Calgary and recommends Canadian winter-hardy cultivars requiring at least six hours of sun, acidic organic-rich soil, and a planting depth of at least 30 cm.
Membership Tiers, Events and Rose Sales
CRS membership is structured in four tiers billed per calendar year: Adult CAD 25, Couple/Family CAD 30, Senior (65+) CAD 20, and Senior Couple CAD 25, payable by e-Transfer, mail or PayPal. Member benefits include the monthly newsletter, a discounted book price, access to the Members Only Annual Rose Sale, invitations to Members Open Gardens, and trophy eligibility at the Annual Rose Show. The annual Members Only rose sale began in 1973 as a mini-rose fundraiser and, after wholesale supply ended in 2014, shifted to shrub and tender roses; orders continue through the Calgary Horticultural Society Garden Show. Regular member meetings are held at 7pm at the Scandinavian Centre Valhalla Room (Calgary Scandinavian Centre), with a featured talk on February 19, 2026 by Don and Michael Bartier of Bartier Brothers Vineyard on soil, vines, and tender plants. Public outreach includes a booth at the Calgary Horticultural Society April Garden Show and partner nurseries Cornhill Nurseries (winter-hardy roses) and HeartStone Roses (miniature roses) listed on the Links page.
