The American Phytopathological Society (APS), founded in December 1908 by 54 pioneering scientists, is an international scientific society of more than 3,600 plant pathology scientists and practitioners spanning nearly 90 countries. Headquartered in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the society unites members from industry, academia, government, and private practice under the guiding motto “Healthy Plants • Healthy World,” advancing plant health through research, education, outreach, and public-policy engagement.

Founding History and Mission

The 54 founders of APS envisioned a society that would be “of invaluable aid in promoting the future development of this important and rapidly growing subject.” More than a century on, APS continues to drive breakthroughs in plant pathology by publishing leading journals, convening annual meetings, sustaining free K–12 teaching resources, and endorsing legislation that safeguards plant ecosystems. The society organizes work through 30-plus committees and six regional divisions covering bacteriology, mycology, nematology, virology, plant–microbe interactions, epidemiology, and related disciplines.

Journals and Publishing Program

APS publishes six peer-reviewed journals that anchor the global literature in plant pathology: Phytopathology (premier fundamental-research journal celebrating a century of publication), Plant Disease (applied research), Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions® (MPMI), Plant Health Progress (integrated applied science), Phytobiomes™ (a fully open-access journal launched in 2016 that focuses on plant-associated microbial communities), and PhytoFrontiers®. APS PRESS has issued more than 300 titles on plant disease, host genetics, epidemiology, and related topics; the APS Image Database offers a peer-reviewed collection of disease-symptom, pest, and disorder images for teaching, training, and field diagnostics.

Annual Meeting and International Programs

Plant Health, APS’s flagship annual meeting, is one of the largest gatherings of plant pathologists worldwide. Plant Health 2026 (PH26) will convene in Providence, Rhode Island, featuring plenary lectures, oral and poster sessions, field trips, the Plant Diagnostic Bowl, workshops, symposia, networking events, and award ceremonies; archives of Plant Health 2025, 2024, 2023, and earlier years remain accessible online. The Office of International Programs (OIP) coordinates International Research Achievement, the Global Membership Program, the Library Donation Program, and the Diagnostic Assay Validation Network (DAVN), connecting researchers across continents to share validated detection methods, datasets, and best practices.

Education, Outreach, and Public Policy

The APS Education Center supplies free K–12 through graduate-level teaching materials, including lesson plans, lab activities, the Plantopia podcast, online continuing-education courses on high-throughput sequencing, fungicide resistance, and research ethics, the Common Names of Plant Diseases database, and the full online edition of “Hungry Planet: Stories of Plant Diseases.” The APS Public Policy Board (PPB) tracks the Endangered Species Act, federal budget priorities, pesticide regulation, and related issues, advocating policies that protect plant ecosystems while translating frontier research into practical field applications.
