Company Overview
Spring Hill Nurseries was founded in 1849 by Peter Bohlender, a Bavarian immigrant who arrived in the United States with his family at age six, as Bohlenders Nursery in North Dayton, Ohio. The nursery relocated to Tipp City, Ohio in 1889 and was renamed Spring Hill Nurseries during World War I, taking its name from the hill across the creek from today’s growing grounds. Originally a wholesale operation, Spring Hill transitioned the majority of its business to mail order in 1930 and has grown into one of America’s longest-running home-gardening plant brands, now marking 175 years of continuous operation.
Product Catalog
The catalog centers on three product groups. Roses anchor the offering and span the three modern garden classes—Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, and Grandiflora—together with tree roses and an exclusive Spring Hill Jumbo grade; all roses are produced by sister company Weeks Roses at its growing grounds in California’s San Joaquin Valley, which harvests more than three million rose plants per year and applies a strict grading system in which only the top two tiers (#1 with an average of three bloom-ready canes, and #1.5 at a more accessible price point) plus the oversized Jumbo grade (roughly three times the size of a standard #1 plant, documented to flower two to three times as heavily in its first season) are offered to Spring Hill customers, with a proprietary Ready-to-Grow Clematis line developed with breeder Deborah Hardwick (varieties that can live 15 years or longer and produce blooms up to 10 inches across) rounding out the premium range. Perennials, annuals, bulbs, ground covers and vines form the second group: perennials are shipped and planted according to five root-type categories—fibrous roots, long taproots, rhizomes, roots with eyes, and fleshy roots—each with its own planting depth and handling guidance, while flowering bulbs split into fall-planted hardy bulbs (tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus and similar spring bloomers that stay in the ground year-round) and spring-planted tender bulbs (dahlias, begonias, gladiolus, cannas and calla lilies that must be lifted each fall and stored at 35–45°F over winter), with each category shipped at the appropriate planting window for the customer’s USDA hardiness zone. Trees, shrubs and hedging stock comprise the third group and are shipped predominantly as bareroot plants, which the company positions as offering easier planting, higher survival rates and stronger first-year growth than potted equivalents; Spring Hill applies a standardized six-step planting method (dig, position, backfill, soak, saucer, wrap) to all bareroot trees and shrubs, and every order ships with a detailed planting guide backed by Spring Hill’s No-Risk Guarantee, under which dissatisfied customers may contact the service team to obtain a merchandise credit.
Research and Quality Assurance
Production is anchored by a 1,200-acre farm on the coast of Lake Michigan, with the primary research and trialing facility on a 20-acre site near Tipp City, Ohio (USDA Zone 5b–6a) and additional test sites in Oregon and California. The breeding team collaborates with leading international breeders, national testing agencies, botanical gardens and university horticulture programs, and runs internal breeding programs for clematis, roses and other selected crops. Every variety is evaluated for disease resistance, hardiness, habit and bloom performance before release, and the company’s 175-year heritage underwrites a No-Risk Guarantee on all shipments.
Industry Partnerships and Brand Extensions
Spring Hill Nurseries maintains exclusive or deep distribution partnerships with several internationally recognized producers, including Iseli Nursery (specializing in conifers and Japanese maples, whose 12-month Color® series and improved maple hybrids are offered through the platform), clematis breeder Deborah Hardwick (whose 20-plus years of research informs the exclusive Ready-to-Grow Clematis line), and sister company Weeks Roses, which has supplied American hobbyists, garden centers and landscape professionals with premium roses since 1938. According to company estimates, more than 25,000,000 American gardens have grown plants produced by Spring Hill.
