Family Origins and Store History
Starkie Bros Garden Center is located in Farmingdale on Long Island, New York. As a kid, George “Butch” Starkie started a landscape business with his brother John Starkie; in their early twenties the two bought the Farmingdale Main Street property and began a small outdoor nursery. In the early 1990s the current full-service indoor and outdoor garden center was built. In the late 1990s the brothers divided their businesses: John continues to operate Starkie Brothers Custom Landscaping, while Butch owns and runs Starkie Bros Garden Center.
Team and Day-to-Day Operations
The center is run by the Starkie family together with a long-tenured staff. Butch and his wife Patti Starkie co-own the business; their sons George “Hank” Starkie and Nick Starkie both studied Ornamental Horticulture Technology at Farmingdale State College (Hank has already completed the degree). Nursery and store manager Jim Markham, who joined in 2004, looks after plant selection and customer planting questions; Veronica Kovarik oversees daily operations and bookkeeping; Lori Lucchese runs the pond department; Tomas Sanchez manages the outdoor nursery yard, including trees, shrubs, and seasonal plants. The store offers landscape design consultations and on-site planting services year-round.
Departments and Product Lines
The retail floor covers a wide range of categories: hardware and batteries, bird supplies, grilling and outdoor living, irrigation and water gardening, pond equipment, lawn and garden, garden apparel, garden decor, planters and containers, organic gardening, soils conditioners compost and landscape materials, mulch, power equipment, snow and ice removal, wood heating and fireplace, home and houseplant supplies, Christmas and seasonal decor, chicken and duck supplies, children’s gardening, clearance, and more. Two specialty departments, Plant Guide and Pond & Water Gardens, sit alongside the general floor. Carried brands include Bonide, Burpee, Scotts, Fox Farm, Monrovia, and Coast of Maine. The online shop ships within the United States and offers in-store pickup.
