Site Overview and Author
Wildflowers-and-Weeds.com is a plant identification and field ecology site run by Montana author Thomas J. Elpel as part of his Web World Portal group of websites. Its three main threads are plant identification, wild edible foraging, and weed ecology, presented through articles, photo galleries, and teaching material rather than a retail catalogue. Elpel also runs the Green University outdoor skills school, and the site reads much like his in-person plant walks: explanation first, terminology second.
The Patterns Method and Botany in a Day
The method behind the site is family-level pattern recognition: learn the shared traits of a family first, then work down to species. Elpel’s textbook Botany in a Day: The Patterns Method of Plant Identification reached its sixth edition in June 2013 at 235 pages, ISBN 978-1-892784-35-3, printed with soy-based inks on recycled paper containing 30 percent post-consumer waste. It opens with eight worldwide families — Mint, Parsley, Mustard, Pea, Lily, Grass, Rose, and Aster — which together cover roughly 45,000 plant species. About 100 family patterns occur across the frost belt of North America, with at least 30 more in frost-free regions farther south. Earlier black-and-white editions followed the Cronquist system; the newer colour edition has largely been updated to APG.

The Plant Families Photo Gallery is organised by family and currently holds more than 1,000 wildflower photographs, mostly from the Rocky Mountains with additions from the west coast and desert southwest. The weed and desertification pages shift the focus to land management, stating plainly that most weed problems are really people problems, and that fire, mowing, and herbicides often address symptoms while sometimes making matters worse.
