美国 西南地区兰花种植者协会 SWROGA – 美国规模最大的兰花区域性联合组织之一

历史由来

西南地区兰花种植者协会 (Southwest Regional Orchid Growers Association, 简称 SWROGA) 创立于 1959 年, 是美国规模最大的兰花区域性联合组织之一, 其前身是美国兰花协会 (American Orchid Society, AOS) 1921 年于波士顿成立后在西南地区设立的分支协调机构。协会总部目前设在美国得克萨斯州, 服务范围覆盖阿肯色、堪萨斯、路易斯安那、新墨西哥、俄克拉荷马、得克萨斯六个州, 下辖 26 个附属兰花协会, 长期致力于整合区域内兰花种植者的兴趣, 推动兰花的栽培、展示与原生种保育。

宗旨与服务

SWROGA 的核心任务是协调各成员协会的活动, 通过举办科学讲座、技术培训和年度大展, 推广兰花栽培知识。协会下设附属协会事务、章程与司法、保护、项目与教育、长期兰花展览目录、广告、地址变更等多个常设委员会, 由区域内的 AOS 认证评审员与资深种植者牵头。保护委员会与 Kisatchie National Forest 等联邦机构合作, 资助区域内 Cypripedium kentuckiense (肯塔基州女士拖鞋兰) 等原生兰花的恢复项目, 是北美少数将兰花保护纳入协会章程的区域性组织。

AOS 评审体系

作为 AOS 在西南地区的主要协作方, SWROGA 协助运行六个 AOS 兰花评审中心, 分别位于 Alamo (得州 Schertz)、Dallas (得州 Garland / Plano)、Great Plains (堪萨斯 Winfield)、Houston (得州休斯顿)、Louisiana (路易斯安那 Alexandria / Baton Rouge) 和 Rocky Mountain (科罗拉多 Alamosa), 每月由 AOS 认证评审员按 AOS 评审手册对送评的兰花植株与切花进行评定, 是兰花爱好者获取 AOS 奖项与品质认证的官方渠道。SWROGA 自身也颁发两项官方奖杯, 分别授予本地展会中评选出的「最佳花朵」与「最佳栽培植株」, 每项奖杯售价 60 美元 (含邮资), 由会长所在地的 SWROGA 财务统一受理订购。

会员活动

SWROGA 每年在六个州的成员协会之间轮流举办一次区域性大展与年会, 是区域内规模最大的兰花交流活动之一, 参会人数、参展展品数量与预算均由主办协会提前数月筹备。会刊 SWROGA NEWS 自协会成立之初便持续出版, 现任编辑团队按季向成员协会与公众寄送, 内容涵盖协会新闻、栽培技巧、会员来稿与展会日程, 也接受广告投放以维持运营。协会网站另设线上展览日程申报系统, 成员协会可在提交展期信息后 72 小时内获得审核上线, 供全美兰花爱好者查询。

兰花保护与教育

SWROGA 长期与美国兰花协会、兰花保育联盟 (Orchid Conservation Alliance) 以及史密森学会下属的北美兰花保育中心保持合作关系, 通过协会会刊与年度展会向公众普及兰花保育知识。协会还参与 AOS 的兰花保育资助项目, 鼓励成员协会围绕区域内原生的 Cypripedium kentuckiense、Hexalectris warnockii 等物种开展调查、育苗与栖息地恢复工作, 是西南地区兰花爱好者将兴趣与生态责任结合起来的桥梁组织。

History

The Southwest Regional Orchid Growers Association (SWROGA) was founded in 1959 and serves as one of the largest regional orchid coordinating bodies in the United States. Its roots trace to the American Orchid Society (AOS), established in 1921 in Boston, which later established SWROGA to coordinate member societies across the south central United States. Headquartered in Texas, SWROGA now covers six states — Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas — and brings together 26 affiliated orchid societies that share a common interest in growing, exhibiting and conserving orchids.

Mission and Services

SWROGA exists to coordinate the activities of its member societies through scientific lectures, technical training and an annual regional show. Standing committees handle affiliated society liaison, bylaws, conservation, programs, advertising and membership records, generally led by accredited AOS judges and experienced growers from across the region. The Conservation Committee works with federal partners such as the Kisatchie National Forest to fund restoration projects for native orchids including Cypripedium kentuckiense, placing SWROGA among a small group of regional orchid bodies in North America that formally embed conservation in their mission.

AOS Judging Program

As the primary regional partner of the American Orchid Society in the southwest, SWROGA helps run six AOS judging centers located at Alamo (Schertz, Texas), Dallas (Garland and Plano, Texas), Great Plains (Winfield, Kansas), Houston (Houston, Texas), Louisiana (Alexandria and Baton Rouge) and Rocky Mountain (Alamosa, Colorado). Accredited AOS judges evaluate submitted plants and cut flowers monthly under the AOS Handbook on Judging, providing growers with the official route to AOS awards and quality recognition. SWROGA also maintains two of its own trophies, awarded at member society shows for Best Flower and Best Grown Plant, each priced at $60 including postage and ordered through the SWROGA treasurer.

Member Activities

SWROGA hosts one regional show and annual meeting each year among the six member states, rotating among the affiliated societies and serving as the largest orchid gathering in the region. Attendance, exhibit counts and budgets are planned months in advance by the host society. The newsletter SWROGA NEWS has been published since the association’s founding and is now mailed quarterly to member societies and the wider public, carrying association news, cultural tips, member contributions and the show calendar; advertising space is sold to support production. The website also runs an online show submission system where member societies can submit upcoming shows and see them posted within 72 hours.

Conservation and Education

SWROGA maintains working relationships with the American Orchid Society, the Orchid Conservation Alliance and the North American Orchid Conservation Center at the Smithsonian Institution, and uses its newsletter and annual show to educate the public about orchid conservation. The association also participates in AOS conservation grant programs, encouraging member societies to survey, propagate and restore habitat for native species such as Cypripedium kentuckiense and Hexalectris warnockii, acting as a bridge between regional orchid hobbyists and broader ecological stewardship.
