Nursery Overview and Location

Chimacum Woods is a rhododendron species nursery located on eighteen acres of Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula, near Port Ludlow, west of the Hood Canal Bridge. About seven acres serve as a display garden open to the public, while the remaining area is used for growing and propagation. The nursery’s primary focus is species rhododendrons, with an emphasis on seed-grown plants to preserve genetic diversity.

Founders’ Background and Species Conservation Mission

The nursery is owned and operated by Robert (Bob) Zimmermann and Beth Orling. Bob first fell in love with rhododendrons over forty-five years ago, beginning his cultivation on a kitchen stove, and has since assembled a collection of roughly three hundred species rhododendrons. He has traveled with botanists five times to China and once to Tibet to study rhododendrons in their native habitats. The nursery’s mission is to produce quality species rhododendron plants, demonstrate how species rhododendrons enhance gardens, educate gardeners, and help preserve endangered species for future generations.

Core Business and Plant Collection

Chimacum Woods offers seed-grown and cutting-grown species rhododendrons for sale, with a catalog that includes R. arboreum, R. augustinii, R. auriculatum, R. calophytum, R. campylocarpum, R. decorum, R. fortunei, R. griersonianum, R. heliolepis, R. irroratum, R. macabeanum, R. sinogrande, R. thomsonii, R. yunnanense, and many others. Most plants are raised from seed collected in the wild, supplemented by cuttings from recognized superior forms of selected species.

Visiting and Public Education

The display garden is open by appointment on most days between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm, with visitors typically arriving alone or in small family groups. The staff guides visitors through the woodland garden, points out notable species rhododendrons, and discusses plant-disease prevention. Plants may be purchased on site, with payment by check or cash preferred. The nursery welcomes gardeners, school groups, homeschool families, and small community gatherings by appointment.

Species Conservation and Community Engagement

Long-term species conservation is central to the nursery’s identity. Given the ongoing threats to rhododendron habitats in Asia, Chimacum Woods aims to preserve genetic material so that, in future generations, descendants of these plants may be returned to their countries of origin when appreciation for biodiversity grows. The nursery collaborates with local botanical societies, garden clubs, and public libraries to host lectures and open-garden days, sharing information through newsletters and community events.
