The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program (UC IPM), a division of UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, is a statewide pest management program established in 1979. UC IPM helps residents, growers, land managers, community leaders, and other professional pest managers prevent and solve pest problems while minimizing unintended impacts on people and their surroundings. The program draws on the expertise of University of California scientists to develop and distribute UC’s best information on managing pests using safe and effective techniques and strategies, forming the foundation of integrated pest management, or IPM.

Program History and Organizational Affiliation

Established in 1979, UC IPM operates as a unit under the UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), headquartered on the University of California, Davis campus. More than 30 UC IPM staff develop and deliver programs across UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC Berkeley, and other UC locations. Through Cooperative Extension, UC IPM delivers information to clients in all 58 California counties.

Research Areas and Technical Tools

UC IPM focuses on four major areas: agricultural IPM, urban and community IPM, natural-resources IPM, and pesticide safety education. Public technical tools include the Pest Management Guidelines published since 1987 with roughly two million annual visits, the Pest Notes fact-sheet series, an identification database covering more than 300 host plants and 650 pests, diseases, and abiotic disorders, the pesticide active ingredients database, and Recursos en Español.

Key Outcomes and Public Impact

UC IPM coordinated the 2016 eradication of the European grapevine moth in California and led bed bug IPM satisfaction studies in multi-unit housing. Safe and Effective Use of Pesticides (1988) remains a reference for California pesticide applicator certification and supports training for the UC Master Gardeners volunteer program.

Publications and Public Engagement

UC IPM maintains the Pest Management Guidelines, online training courses, annual Highlights, and What’s News feeds. The program collaborates with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), grower associations, and UC campuses, serving California farmers, urban residents, and pest management professionals throughout the state and beyond.
