Draycott Gardens is a long-running home-based mail-order nursery in Upperco, Maryland, devoted exclusively to beardless irises. Run by Carol Warner from her residence, the nursery is one of North America’s principal sources for Siberian, Japanese, Pseudata, and Spec-X irises, and also publishes new cultivar introductions from external hybridizers Dean Cole and Hiroshi Shimizu.

Nursery Background and Location

Draycott Gardens is operated by Carol Warner as a one-person home-based nursery on Falls Road in Upperco, in northern Baltimore County, Maryland. The nursery operates strictly by mail order, with no on-site sales, no signs, and no regular business hours; visitors are welcomed to the display gardens and stock beds only by appointment. Peak bloom timing varies by iris type — Siberian irises peak around May 18–31, while Pseudatas and Japanese irises bloom roughly June 15 to July 1, with Pseudatas slightly earlier. The nursery combines retail mail-order with active hybridizing work, with Carol Warner handling day-to-day operations and customer orders personally.

Catalog Scope and Iris Groups

Beardless irises are the exclusive focus of the catalog. Four major groups anchor the listings: Siberian irises (Iris sibirica cultivars), Japanese irises (I. ensata), Pseudatas (intersectional hybrids of I. pseudacorus and I. ensata), and the Spec-X series of species-crosses involving Siberian parentage. Smaller sections cover Spuria irises, I. tectorum (the Japanese roof iris), moisture-loving Laevigata irises, and North American native Versicolor and Virginica irises and their hybrids. The nursery distributes its catalog electronically as a PDF order form and does not accept online ordering or credit card payments, in keeping with its traditional, mail-order-only character.

New Introductions and Hybridizers

Two external hybridizers supply most of Draycott’s recent introductions. Dean Cole, a jeweler based in Portland, Maine, continues the tetraploid Siberian line developed by his late mentor Currier McEwen and has released a steady stream of new cultivars through the nursery: ‘Amethyst Frost’, ‘Ruby Peacock’, ‘Beespeckled’ (2021), ‘Lemon Quartz’, ‘Topaz Ruffles’ (2022), and the 2026 release ‘Timeless Ruby’, a ruffled deep rose-red tetraploid Siberian with a gold edge and blue flash. Japanese breeder Hiroshi Shimizu contributes a parallel stream of Pseudata and Japanese iris introductions including ‘Akimatsuri’, ‘Byakuya No Kuni’ (the “land of the midnight sun”), ‘Benibutae’, ‘Chaki’, ‘Ause’, ‘Chastubo’, and the dwarf ‘Shimo Murasaki’ (16 inches). All new introductions are trialed and increased at Upperco before release.

Cultural Guidance and Ordering

The nursery publishes a thorough Culture page covering soil preparation, planting depth, watering, mulching, transplanting intervals, fertilizing, and pest control for beardless irises. Key recommendations include rich organic soils, acidic conditions for Japanese irises, regular division every three to four years, balanced spring and post-bloom feeding, and avoidance of late-fall fertilization that can force tender winter growth. Orders require a $15 minimum, payment by check or money order, and must be received by September 10; plants ship bare-root, freshly dug, via U.S. Priority Mail on Mondays and Tuesdays. Shipping is tiered east or west of the Mississippi; international orders pay a $62 phytosanitary certificate fee; a printed culture sheet accompanies every shipment.
