The Holden Arboretum

(Long Center for Plant and Environmental Science)支撑前沿研究,霍尔登种子银行(Holden Seed Bank)为植物保护做出贡献。

History

In 1931, mining magnate Albert Fairchild Holden (1866–2013) established the Holden Arboretum as a living memorial to his deceased wife and daughter. The site opened to the public in 1937. In 2014, the Holden Arboretum merged with the Cleveland Botanical Garden to form Holden Forests & Gardens, combining two of Northeast Ohio’s most significant botanical institutions.

Major Attractions

The Holden Arboretum features iconic attractions including the Murch Canopy Walk, which takes visitors through and above the forest canopy for immersive views of the tree canopy and streams below, and the Kalberer Emergent Tower, offering sweeping panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. Other highlights include the Eliot and Linda Paine Rhododendron Discovery Garden, the Display Garden, and the Corning Visitor Center.

Natural Areas

Stebbins Gulch is considered the crown jewel of Holden’s extensive natural areas — one of the most unspoiled natural history preserves in Northeast Ohio, where exposed bedrock reveals 300 million years of geological history. The natural areas encompass diverse forests, meadows, and lake habitats across Lake and Geauga Counties, forming a patchwork of old-growth forests, young post-agriculture forests, and wetlands.

Science and Conservation

Holden Forests & Gardens is committed to scientific research and plant conservation. The Long Center for Plant and Environmental Science supports cutting-edge research, while the Holden Seed Bank contributes to plant conservation efforts. The organization also operates the David G. Leach Research Station and participates in large-scale landscape restoration projects across the Great Lakes region.
