The African Violet Society of America (AVSA) is the world’s oldest and largest international hobbyist society for African violets (Saintpaulia). Founded on November 8, 1946, in Atlanta, Georgia, AVSA operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit with its headquarters in Beaumont, Texas, and is dedicated to the culture, registration, scholarly study, and exhibition of African violets worldwide.
Founding Background and Organizational Nature
AVSA was formally organized on November 8, 1946, in Atlanta, Georgia, by a group of African violet enthusiasts, with the founding purpose of promoting the cultivation, exchange, and scientific study of the genus Saintpaulia. Just three years later, in 1949, members established the Boyce Edens Research Fund to support research into African violet history, taxonomy, and horticultural physiology. Today the Society operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, staffed by a full-time Office Manager and a part-time assistant at its headquarters in Beaumont, Texas, and is governed by an elected Executive Committee, a Board of Directors, and a network of standing committees that meet each year at the Annual Convention.
Publications and International Member Network
The Society’s flagship publication, the African Violet Magazine, has been issued continuously since the Society’s founding and remains, in its bimonthly form, the most important information resource for African violet growers worldwide. The magazine features cultivation advice, cultivar spotlights, judging commentary, scholarly abstracts, and member-contributed articles. In addition, AVSA operates an online store selling books, cultivation software, lecture recordings, and member supplies, and maintains partnerships with commercial growers to help hobbyists source high-quality plants.
Research, Scholarships and Cultivar Registration
On the scholarly side, AVSA channels the Boyce Edens Research Fund into long-term grants to universities and independent researchers working on Saintpaulia taxonomy, physiology, and pathology. The Society has supported such research since 1950, and in more recent years has added an annual undergraduate-and-graduate scholarship for students studying ornamental horticulture, floriculture, plant genetics, or botany. AVSA also maintains the International Registration authority for the genus Saintpaulia, the AVSA Standard Show System, and the training program for AVSA judges, ensuring consistent cultivar naming and judging criteria across continents.
Hobbyist Resources on Cultivation and Showing
AVSA serves hobbyists worldwide through its network of Affiliate Clubs, which span ten United States regions plus Canada, Mexico and Central/South America, Australia and New Zealand, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and Europe (including Russia). Each year the Society hosts the Annual Convention, featuring a national cultivar show, sales area, lectures, and judging school. The Society also publishes a beginner’s cultivation guide (Violets 101), maintains an active social media presence and YouTube channel, and distributes weekly Growing Tips and monthly AVSA News to email subscribers.
