The New Hampshire Orchid Society (NHOS), organized in 1983, is one of the oldest and largest orchid societies in the New England region of the United States. Headquartered in Manchester, New Hampshire and registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, NHOS currently has over 200 members and is dedicated to orchid culture, native orchid conservation, and community horticultural education.
Core Activities and Membership Benefits
NHOS holds monthly meetings on the second Saturday of each month at the Old Bedford Town Hall in Bedford, New Hampshire. Show table judging begins at 11 a.m., and the formal meeting starts at noon. The society hosts an annual orchid show each spring — the 2026 show was held March 6-8 — along with a summer annual picnic, slide presentations, guest speakers, educational workshops, and experienced orchid growers on hand to answer questions. Members can purchase orchid plants, pots, growing media, and supplies through the on-site sales area and raffle table.
The society publishes a monthly newsletter and maintains an orchid library from which members may borrow books, videos, magazines, and journals. Annual dues are $30, covering one or two members at the same address, with a dues period running September 1 through August 31. NHOS maintains close affiliations with the American Orchid Society (AOS) and the Orchid Digest Corporation, serving as a central hub for orchid hobbyists and professionals throughout the New England region.
Native Orchid and Conservation Research Programs
The NHOS Education and Conservation Committee, chaired by Jean Stefanik, coordinates several long-term research and conservation initiatives. The NH Native Orchid Project mobilizes members to observe and document native orchid populations across the state — including Pink Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium acaule), Goodyera, and Platanthera species — building a shared database with the NH Division of Forests and Lands, US Fish & Wildlife, and the New England Wildflower Society. Documented species include Cypripedium acaule, Calopogon tuberosus, Goodyera pubescens and tessellata, Isotria medioloides, multiple Platanthera species, Pogonia ophioglossoides, and Spiranthes ochraleuca.
The Ponemah Pogonia Restoration Project has been transplanting rose pogonia (Pogonia ophioglossoides) test populations at Ponemah Bog in Amherst, NH since 2013, with continuous monitoring of survival rates. The Telipogon Pollinator Research Grant funded doctoral student Carlos Martel’s field research on pollinators of South American Telipogon orchids in Peru, published in the AOS ORCHIDS magazine October 2014 issue. Other ongoing programs include a Singapore Orchid Conservation Poster Grant co-produced with Singapore government agencies, the UNH Greenhouse Project supporting the University of New Hampshire greenhouse, and the Fakahatchee Webcam Project monitoring native orchid populations in Florida’s Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve.
Governance and Member Structure
NHOS is led by four core officers — President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary — supported by five trustees serving staggered two-year terms and 14 committee chairs covering Programs, Annual Orchid Show, Library, Membership, Show Table, Newsletter, Hospitality, Publicity, AOS & Affiliated Societies Liaison, Education & Conservation, Auction, Website, Risk Management, and Social Media. The society’s mailing address is NH Orchid Society, PO Box 5375, Manchester, NH 03108. Operations run on the Wild Apricot association management platform, with members accessing meeting minutes, internal event photo galleries, and newsletter archives through the Members Only area.
