The Orchid Society of Southern California (OSSC) is the oldest orchid society in Southern California, founded in 1940 in the Los Angeles area and now in its 86th year. Organized as a 501(c)(5) tax-exempt nonprofit, the society is dedicated to fostering and encouraging education in the culture, growing, hybridization, preservation, and perpetuation of native and hybrid orchids. OSSC has been affiliated with the American Orchid Society (AOS), Orchid Digest magazine, and the California Garden Clubs since the late 1940s, and has participated in the Southland Orchid Show every year since its 1958 inception, serving as a cornerstone institution of the Southern California orchid community.

Society History & AOS Affiliation

Founded in 1940, OSSC is the oldest orchid society in Southern California and has been affiliated with the American Orchid Society since 1948. The society co-organizes the AOS Pacific South Regional Judging Center, which holds monthly judging sessions on the second Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Huntington Botanical Center lower level in San Marino. Five judging sessions are scheduled in 2026 (July 11, August 8, September 12, October 10, November 14). OSSC maintains a complete historical list of past presidents and current officers; the 2026 board is led by President James Roberts, 1st VP Carol Beule, 2nd VP Kevin Chen, Recording Secretary Ryan Constantino, Treasurer Wendy Fisher, and Membership Secretary Rose Fistrovica Timiryan, with the public board roster reflecting the society’s long-term operational stability.

Membership & Monthly Programs

OSSC membership is open to all and costs $35.00 per year per household, payable each January (or $17.50 for members joining between July 1 and October 31; those joining in November or December receive the full following year). Members meet on the second Monday of each month (no August meeting) at 7:30 p.m. at First Christian Church, 221 South Sixth Street, Burbank, California, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Twelve membership benefits include a monthly newsletter, talks from worldwide orchid experts, use of the OSSC reference library, monthly orchid raffle entry, special badge-wearers’ raffle, vendor discounts, networking with amateur and commercial growers, the annual Holiday Party, participation in the OSSC display at the Huntington International Orchid Show, and field trips to out-of-town orchid vendors and events. New members receive $5 in raffle tickets and (since July 2011) a complimentary 1-gallon Cymbidium orchid courtesy of Orchids by Art.

Annual Auction, Shows & International Participation

The OSSC Annual Orchid Auction is the society’s most significant fund-raiser. In 2026 it is held Saturday, June 13, starting at 1:00 p.m. at First Christian Church in Burbank, with hundreds of species and hybrid orchids, AOS-accredited Judge Doug Overstreet presiding, and free admission for the public. OSSC has participated in the Southland Orchid Show every year since 1958 and has co-organized the Huntington International Orchid Show since 2014; the 10th Annual Huntington International Orchid Show runs October 9-11, 2026, with members volunteering for setup (October 14-16) and teardown (October 11), and receiving free admission plus an invitation to the October 16 opening reception.

Educational Resources & Community Engagement

OSSC sustains an active educational ecosystem through monthly culture tips at meetings, a reference library of orchid books and periodicals, a photo archive of member plants and events dating to 2021, a speaker biographies archive documenting decades of visiting experts, and an extensive online resources section (vendor directory, orchid links, species study group, calendar of events). Members regularly participate in ribbon judging, member plant inspection, Q&A sessions, refreshment breaks, and the society’s orchid auction as both consignors and bidders. The society’s orchid vendor field trips and annual picnic further strengthen the amateur-to-advanced-collector continuum that has defined Southern California orchid hobbyists since 1940.
