About the Nursery

Rosenmageren is a small family-run rose breeding garden in Bjerlev, a village in central-southern Jutland, Denmark, founded as a sole proprietorship by a single breeder in the late 1980s. The property lies a short distance west of Vejle. The nursery initially focused on miniature roses, later shifting to hybrid tea and garden roses, and in 1999 began systematic cross-breeding work. Today it produces roughly 25,000 hybrid seeds a year and continues to introduce new named cultivars in small batches. Operations remain on a single-person scale, with the entire cycle — crossing, sowing, selection, naming and propagation — carried out on the same small holding.

Breeding Programme and Cultivar Range

Every cultivar sold at Rosenmageren is the work of one breeder, who selects parents, performs the crosses, sows the seed, evaluates seedlings and decides which plants are worth keeping and naming. The programme typically produces around 25,000 hybrid seeds a year, of which only a handful survive the selection process and become commercialised. Cultivars are generally named after people, Danish places or family events — Alis Liljan, Annie, Anny, Bent, Birthe og Ernst, Christina, Claudia, Connie, David, Else Lund, Frede og Barnebarn, Fruergaard and Gram Slots Rose are representative examples. Many of the names reflect gifting or commemorative occasions. Cultivars such as Gram Slots Rose can be grown as a shrub or trained as a short climber, with strongly fragrant flowers that hold well as cut blooms for roughly a week.

New Selections and Release Rhythm

The nursery raises new seedling lines every year, but only a small share is ever released commercially; many selections remain as observational plants in the display garden until their traits stabilise. This rhythm keeps annual releases limited, and most commercial stock is propagated by budding rather than cuttings, which limits volume but keeps the genetics stable. Customers can pre-order new selections, usually collecting their plants from the nursery one or two growing seasons later. Discontinued cultivars are kept as mother plants in the garden, and visitors can select a specific mother plant during the flowering season and reserve budded plants for later pickup.

Personalised Naming and On-Site Sales

One of the nursery’s distinctive services is the option of naming a one-of-a-kind rose after a person or a company. The customer chooses the name, and the rose is sold exclusively under that name going forward. The buyer receives a signed declaration stating that the cultivar is unique, and may also choose whether to allow further propagation by budding. Personalised roses are often commissioned as gifts for occasions such as Mother’s Day, engagements, weddings or confirmations. Visits and Community Activities

Rosenmageren regularly hosts visits from garden clubs, local rose society branches, women’s associations and community horticultural groups, mostly during the late-spring flowering peak.
