(Singing Tree Gardens Nursery)

  • 杜鹃与高山杜鹃:rhododendrons(主业)和 azaleas,包含乔木型(如 Loderi King George)、杂交选育系列及多个矮生型(dwarf)园艺品种;
  • 冬季花卉:daphnes(以 Daphne odora 等香花品种为代表)、hellebores(Helleborus x hybridus、Helleborus niger);
  • 春季木本花卉:magnolias(含 M. soulangeana 鹅掌楸型玉兰)、flowering dogwoods(含 kousa 韩国山茱萸与 ‘Scarlet Fire’、’Summer Fun’ 等栽培品种);
  • 花园结构植物:dwarf connifers(矮生针叶树)、heathers(欧石楠)、hydrangeas(绣球)、trees 与 shrubs(乔灌木综合)、plants for Japanese gardens(日本庭园专类);
  • 其他专类:ornamental grass(观赏草)、fertilizers and amendments(肥料与土壤改良剂)、web special(线上特价)。

Nursery Overview

Singing Tree Gardens Nursery is a small specialty plant nursery located on Dow’s Prairie near McKinleyville, California, in Humboldt County along the North Coast redwood belt. The nursery describes itself as a “Green Nursery,” drawing on uncontaminated deep-well water and compost-based organic soil mixes to raise its own plants, with the stated goal of inspiring others to grow plants as a way of giving back to the earth.

Rather than operating as a wholesale nursery, Singing Tree Gardens functions as a boutique specialty producer serving gardeners nationwide. Founded initially as a rhododendron-focused family nursery in 1992, the operation has expanded over three decades into a broader catalog of uncommon ornamental plants. More than half of the property is devoted to display gardens showing mature specimens, while the remaining acreage is divided into propagation and growing areas organized by plant group.

Founding History

The nursery was co-founded in 1992 by Don Wallace and Ryan Scott on a 2-acre parcel near the Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville, originally focused on rhododendrons. Don Wallace had long been absorbed by rhododendron propagation and hybridizing and developed the idea of turning that interest into a display-garden nursery. Ryan Scott grew up around plants and transitioned from forestry into ornamental nursery stock.

After ten years, the original 2-acre site could no longer support the growing propagation program, and the nursery relocated to its present 10-acre parcel on Dow’s Prairie, where it continues to operate. From 1992 onward, the operation expanded from rhododendrons into a wider range of uncommon ornamentals while retaining the founders’ ongoing commitment to rhododendron propagation and hybridization.

Plant Catalog

The online catalog spans 19 specialty collections, organized as follows:

  • Rhododendrons and Azaleas: rhododendrons (the core focus) and azaleas, including tree-form varieties such as Loderi King George, hybridizing selections, and a range of dwarf cultivars;
  • Winter-flowering plants: daphnes (including Daphne odora) and hellebores (Helleborus x hybridus, Helleborus niger);
  • Spring-flowering woody plants: magnolias (including M. soulangeana saucer magnolia) and flowering dogwoods (including kousa types and cultivars such as ‘Scarlet Fire’ and ‘Summer Fun’);
  • Garden structure plants: dwarf conifers, heathers, hydrangeas, trees and shrubs (general), and plants for Japanese gardens;
  • Other collections: ornamental grasses, fertilizers and amendments, and a web special clearance section.

Many catalog items are listed as sold out at any given moment, reflecting a small-batch seasonal production model; new offerings appear as propagation cycles complete.

Mail-Order and Shipping

The nursery ships nationwide via UPS, with new orders typically requiring 1 to 1.5 weeks for processing. Due to state phytosanitary requirements, the nursery does not ship to Arizona, Mississippi, Hawaii, or Alaska. All mail-order plants are raised in the nursery’s own compost-based soil mixes, intended to ensure strong root systems that perform well in customer gardens.

On-Site Nursery

The nursery is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Display gardens reach peak rhododendron bloom in April and May, while the gardens remain visually rewarding throughout the year thanks to plantings beyond rhododendrons, including heathers, dwarf conifers, and other ornamental groups. Group tours can be arranged by appointment for garden clubs and similar organizations.

The core team: Don Wallace continues to handle propagation and growing and meets visiting customers in person; Mary Auradou manages nursery and mail-order operations, advises on soil preparation, planting techniques, and aftercare, and assists customers with online catalog selection; Ryan Scott now spends most of his time designing residential landscape gardens along the North Coast, drawing on a naturalist’s eye.
