Nationale Naturlandschaften e.
Umbrella Body and the Four Protected-Category Network
Nationale Naturlandschaften e. V. (NNL e. V.) is the German umbrella body for large-scale protected areas, headquartered in Berlin. The association brings together 16 national parks, 104 nature parks, 18 biosphere reserves and 5 wilderness areas, totalling 143 protected sites that cover roughly one-third of the country’s land area. It was founded in 1991 under the name EUROPARC Deutschland e. V. and serves as the German national section of the EUROPARC Federation. In 2024 it co-established the Stiftung Nationale Naturlandschaften gGmbH together with the Verband Deutscher Naturparke e. V. (VDN) to handle brand operations, education cooperation and external fundraising.
Geographic Spread and Inter-Category Positioning
The four protected-area categories run by member sites take on complementary roles. National parks and wilderness areas are set aside for nature to develop on its own terms; biosphere reserves work within the UNESCO framework to combine protection with sustainable development; nature parks emphasise recreation and tourism for residents and visitors. Together they stretch from the Wadden Sea coast in the north to the Alps in the south. Of the total protected area, about 1,680 square kilometres are reserved as core zones where natural dynamics unfold without interference. No resident lives more than 70 kilometres from a protected area, and more than 2,500 regional partners support visits with guided tours, accommodation and events. Entry to the sites is free, as are many visitor centres and exhibitions.
Volunteer Programme and Civic Engagement
The association runs the volunteer programme Ehrensache Natur, which lists around 200 placements across Germany, ranging from amphibian monitoring to habitat maintenance. Public figures on the website report more than 4,000 registered volunteers. The site offers a single intake point for civic-science activities, corporate volunteering, the youth network Biosphäre, and environmental internships. Volunteers are matched with local protected-area coordinators, who can also issue certificates describing the type, duration and skills gained — useful for study and job applications. Most placements require no formal qualifications, although species-identification skills, equipment handling or public-speaking ability are expected in some cases.
Education, Communication and Outreach
For education and outreach the association and its members run the Junior Ranger programme. According to the official figures, more than 100 Junior Ranger groups operate across Germany, with over 2,500 children and young people taking part each year. Long-term partnerships with schools and kindergartens run under the NNL-Schulen and NNL-Kitas schemes, currently covering more than 870 institutions. The VDN-Fotoportal photo library, contributed by contracted photographers including Raimund Knauf, Sebastian Schröder-Esch and Rainer Simonis, supplies imagery for publications, web features and exhibitions. The catalogue includes the guidebook Reisen in die NNL, thematic brochures and annual reports.
Governance, Joint Operations and Funding
The association is led by an honorary board of four members (Vorstand) who between them represent the three protected-area categories — national parks, biosphere reserves and wilderness areas — together with a representative for relevant NGOs. Day-to-day operations are handled from the Berlin office. Funding comes from membership fees, project grants, corporate partnerships (including a pilot scheme on sustainable caravan tourism) and donations plus supporting-membership schemes aimed at private individuals and companies. The association is registered at the Berlin-Charlottenburg local court and publishes regular financial statements. It runs in parallel with the Bonn-based sister association Verband Deutscher Naturparke e. V., and together the two maintain the Nationale Naturlandschaften brand and the rules for using its logo.
