Park Overview
Park Seleger Moor is a landscape garden in Rifferswil, in the Swiss canton of Zurich. Its paths pass through beds of rhododendrons and azaleas, ferns, water lilies, ponds, streams, and mature trees. The official site describes it as one of Switzerland’s largest rhododendron and azalea gardens. More than 10,000 rhododendrons flower in spring, followed by hydrangeas and aquatic plants later in the year.
History
In 1953, Robert Seleger found that the acidic peat soil in the Rifferswil moor suited pine trees well. He leased the land and gradually developed it into a rhododendron nursery. After a harsh winter damaged many young plants, he traveled to Alaska in search of hardy wild species for breeding. His garden “Light and Shadow” received a gold medal at the 1959 G 59 horticultural exhibition. He founded the Seleger Moor Foundation in 1978, while the former peat workings were gradually transformed into the park’s ponds and waterways.
Plants and Wetland
The collection is centered on rhododendrons and azaleas, with Japanese irises, peonies, ferns, hydrangeas, astilbes, daylilies, hostas, and water plants as well. The fern garden was inspired by a botanical journey to Mount Kinabalu in Borneo and contains nearly 100 fern species. Streams, water-lily ponds, and wetland areas also provide habitats for local wildlife. Native spruce, pine, larch, and birch grow alongside species such as the coast redwood, while seasonal changes give the park a varied character through the year.
Conservation and Experience
Today, the park combines horticultural display with peatland restoration and biodiversity work. The team records local plants and animals, removes sources of disturbance, plants species suited to the site, and monitors the progress of the restored areas. A sensory garden with a 300-metre barefoot path opened in 2024. It gives visitors a closer look at wetlands, trees, and moisture-loving plants in a natural setting.
Visiting
Visitors can take the S5 from Zurich or Zug and change at Affoltern am Albis for the postbus stop “Seleger Moor.” The main paths are generally accessible for wheelchairs, although some smaller paths are uneven. The park includes woodland walks, ponds, specialist plant areas, and spaces for cultural activities. Opening hours, flowering conditions, and event details should be checked on the official site before visiting.
