Location & Microhabitats
Edgewood is a private garden situated in Exton, Chester County, southeastern Pennsylvania (USDA Zone 7a), continuously developed since 1995 by British-born botanist Dr. John Lonsdale. The property sits just below the ridge-line on the northern side of the Great Valley, 600 feet above sea level and roughly 300 feet above the valley floor. Its sheltered, south-facing aspect and excellent drainage allow many plants that would not normally survive in this region to thrive.
Terrain & Soil
The garden covers about 1.6 acres, extending 400 feet with a nearly 40° slope. About one acre of native deciduous woodland occupies the upper portion, while the soil is slightly acidic and rocky across the rest of the site. Only the raised beds along the driveway and the house are improved; the remainder is left in its natural state. These conditions mimic upland habitats, favouring alpines, xeric plants, and bulbs.
Plant Collections
Several thousand hardy plants, trees and shrubs are cultivated here, with a focus on rare alpines, woodland species, xeric plants, and specialty bulbs. Noted genera include Galanthus (snowdrops) in many cultivars, Cyclamen, Trillium (local and out-of-state forms), Helleborus hybrids, uncommon Colchicum and Eranthis, plus regional novelties such as Adonis, Spigelia marilandica, and Iris dabashanensis. Collections are grouped across five principal microhabitats: raised beds, xeric beds, bog gardens, woodlands, and cold greenhouses.
Photography & Public Activities
Over more than twenty years, the gardener has assembled a photographic archive exceeding 20,000 images documenting the garden and its plants. The archive is published online on the Edgewood main site under Image Galleries, organized by genus and season, serving both as a visual record and an educational resource. The garden is not open for visits, but plants can be ordered online or purchased at seasonal plant sales and lecture events, with appearances scheduled in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Delaware, Rhode Island and beyond.
Contact & Visiting Policy
Edgewood is not currently open to the public. Inquiries about plant availability, existing orders, upcoming sales, or speaking invitations can be sent via the Contact Us form on the main site. Because the garden is maintained by one person, most visitation requests cannot be accommodated; plant-related correspondence is answered first.
