从 Woolmans 到 Johnsons

From Woolmans to Johnsons

The nursery covered here, Woolmans, has since been folded into Johnsons, and the site now describes itself as formerly Woolmans. Johnsons is the brand formed from the merger, and it puts it as taking the best of both Johnsons Seeds and Woolmans together, a heritage name for people who love colour. It was established in 1820 at Kentford near Newmarket and is one of the longest-standing names in the seed trade.

The offices, storage and packing all sit on a single site, which also holds the show garden. Everything is grown there before it is offered, and the site fronts its pitch with a satisfaction guarantee rather than burying it. It points to more than two hundred years of helping gardeners and calls itself one of the most reliable suppliers in the UK.

One thing is worth being clear about: the company behind Johnsons is in fact Mr Fothergill’s Seeds, whose registered address is at the same Kentford site. Fothergill’s was founded in Newmarket in 1978 and runs three heritage seed brands, of which Johnsons is one, the others being DT Brown and Fothergill’s itself. Since August 2023 the business has been wholly owned by funds within Harwood Capital Management.

What they sell

The core is flower and vegetable seed in packets, along with gardening gifts and kits. Alongside that sit a few lines with a pedigree: a herb range developed with the gardener Jekka McVicar, a collection with Sarah Raven, and a children’s range called Little Gardeners with seed, pots and kits.

Seed is not the whole business. Young plants and bulbs are sold too, with a particularly deep chrysanthemum range and named dahlias, sorted both by plant and by colour. Composts, feed, tools, watering and pot supports complete the list, and there are pre-planted hanging baskets to hang up as they are.

How to buy it

This is where it differs from an ordinary online shop. Johnsons does not run a direct-to-consumer store of its own; the ranges are distributed through garden retailers, high street shops, supermarkets and DIY outlets in the UK and further afield, and the company puts supporting those retailers as the reason it does not sell direct.

In practice you are likely to find it on the seed shelf of a local garden centre or supermarket rather than ordering online. The site carries a product search and a stockist finder, which is the quickest way to check whether a nearby shop is stocking it.

Grown before it is sold

Quality is argued from first-hand trial: the seeds, bulbs and plants are all grown in the company’s own show garden in Suffolk before they go out, and on top of that sits the satisfaction guarantee, with a replacement or a full refund if you are not satisfied. Delivery is free above a set order value, with restrictions by area.

For anyone who would rather not gamble on a photograph of a seed packet, that combination is the reassuring part. A seasonal catalogue also comes out each spring, picking out the varieties worth growing that season and available to download.

The name, and what changed

Worth setting out plainly: the woolmans.com domain now redirects to the Johnsons site, and product photographs still carry the Woolmans name, as on the various named Woolmans chrysanthemums. The old article described Woolmans as a separate nursery; in practice the two have merged and Johnsons is the name that now faces the public.

The difference that matters to a reader is how you buy. Woolmans used to sell plants and seed through its own website, whereas the merged Johnsons deliberately sells through physical retail only, so the first thing to check is which local shop stocks it.
