Founding History
The Amsterdam Tulip Museum opened in 2004 inside a historic canal house in the Jordaan district of central Amsterdam, devoted to telling the surprising and flamboyant history of the tulip. The three crosses on its roundel trace back to the coat of arms of Amsterdam, traditionally read as marking three historic fords across the river Amstel that gave the city its name and its commercial life.
Building and Location
Set among intimate shops, galleries, restaurants, and sidewalk cafés, the museum is a short walk from Amsterdam Centraal station and steps away from the Anne Frank House and the Westerkerk church. The historic canal-side architecture shapes the visitor experience, limiting access for wheelchairs but placing the museum firmly within the city’s seventeenth-century canal ring.
Permanent Exhibits
Six connected rooms lead visitors through a chronological story: the wild tulip and its native Central Asian foothills, the flower under the Ottoman Sultan Süleiman the Magnificent, the Dutch Golden Age tulip trade and the famous Tulipmania crash of the 1630s, the rise of commercial bulb growing, the global spread of tulip culture, and a short documentary film on a year of modern tulip farming.
Admission and Services
Standard admission is €5, families of three or more pay €10, and students pay €3. The museum opens daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a 25-visitor cap to keep the historic rooms comfortable. An average visit lasts 20-25 minutes, while viewers who watch every film typically spend about an hour; the museum does not participate in the Dutch Museum Card but accepts the I Amsterdam City Card.
Official Resources
The museum’s online shop carries artist-commissioned works, hand-painted Delft tiles, tulip-themed tableware, jewelry, stationery, children’s books, and Dutch flower bulbs at good prices. For current opening hours, ticket details, and travel tips, visitors are encouraged to check the official site before planning a trip.
