Institute Overview and Historical Background
Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is located in Millbrook, New York. Founded in 1983 by eminent ecologist Gene E. Likens, the Institute is one of the world’s leading independent nonprofit ecological research organizations. The 2,000-acre campus sits in the mid-Hudson Valley, roughly 70 miles north of New York City and a comparable distance south of Albany. The Institute is dedicated to understanding how ecosystems work, with global expertise in freshwater, forest, disease, and urban ecology.
Research Directions and Global Partnerships
Research at Cary Institute centers on four core areas: disease ecology (Lyme, tick-borne, and mosquito-borne illness), freshwater ecology (Hudson River, harmful algal blooms, road salt), forest ecology (carbon storage, invasive pests, wildfire resilience), and urban ecology (green infrastructure, climate adaptation). The Institute has 20 PhD scientists and 40 research support staff, maintaining long-term collaborations with Yale, Cornell, Princeton, Columbia, Boston University, and others, while conducting field projects in Argentina, Brazil, China, Chile, Germany, Kenya, Singapore, and South Africa.
Signature Long-Term Research Programs
Cary Institute leads the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, a U.S. National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research site, and plays a guiding role in the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network. Scientists have continuously monitored the Hudson River since 1985, operating 20+ environmental monitoring stations that feed the Hudson River Comprehensive Restoration Plan. Cary researchers have informed Clean Air Act amendments, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessments, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency decisions, and 2018 New York State legislation on Lyme and tick-borne disease.
Education, Outreach, and Workforce Development
Education programs at the Institute serve K-12 students, undergraduates, graduate students, and classroom teachers. Signature offerings include Eco-Discovery summer day camps, the annual Data Jam competition, the Mid-Hudson Young Environmental Scientist mentoring program, and a winter graduate course on Fundamentals of Ecosystem Ecology. Summer Teacher Institutes, professional workshops, and the BIORETS research experience equip educators to bring current ecological science into classrooms, training the next generation of ecologists and resource managers.
Campus Facilities and Public Visits
The Tozer Ecosystem Science Building houses research facilities, analytical laboratories, an environmental monitoring station, classrooms, and an auditorium, with a state-of-the-art conference center on the ground floor. The campus also includes trails, an outdoor classroom, and a weather station, with public trail access from April 1 through October 31. The street address is 2801 Sharon Turnpike (Route 44), Millbrook, N.Y.; the main phone is (845) 677-5343. Outside groups should contact Grounds Manager Mike Fargione at least one week in advance to confirm availability.
