秋海棠(Begonias)系列最负盛名,按形态分为竹芋型(Cane-like)、根茎型(Rhizomatous)、灌木型(Shrub-like)和杂类(Miscellaneous)四大类,并提供C126A(Compact Cane 3株套装)、C126B(Tall Cane 3株套装)、C126T(Brad Thompson老品种3株套装)、C130(Rhizomatous 3株套装)、C131(Miniature Rhizomatous 3株套装)、C129(Shrub-like 3株套装)等专业组合。

Kartuz Greenhouses – A 70-Year Family Rare & Exotic Plant Mail-Order Nursery in Vista, California

Kartuz Greenhouses is a family-run mail-order nursery located in Vista, in northern San Diego County, California. Founded in the early 1950s, the nursery has been operating continuously for more than 70 years, specializing in rare and exotic ornamental plants with a focus on breeding, hybridizing, and shipping young plants by mail. The catalog features over 1,000 varieties across its four key specialties: begonias, gesneriads, hoyas, and passionflowers. The nursery is open Monday through Saturday by appointment only and closed to the public on Sunday.

History and Founder

The nursery was founded by Michael J. Kartuz (known in the trade as Mike Kartuz) in the early 1950s, originally based in Massachusetts, before relocating to the warmer climate of Vista, California. Mike Kartuz joined the American Begonia Society (ABS) in the early 1950s, and for the next 70 years he combined his own skills as a hybridizer with those of other leading hybridizers. The nursery has been a long-time supporter of the ABS, and many of its own begonia hybrids have been registered through the society. Mike Kartuz passed away on June 14, 2022, leaving a deep legacy in rare-plant breeding. Renowned hybridizer Brad Thompson collaborated with the nursery for many years; the “Brad Thompson Hybrids” line of cane-type and other begonias remains highly prized by collectors.

Plant Specialties

Kartuz Greenhouses organizes its catalog around four core plant families plus a broad “Rare Flowering Plants” section, covering more than 60 plant families and over 1,000 varieties. Begonias are the flagship genus, divided into Cane-like, Rhizomatous, Shrub-like, and Miscellaneous groups; popular collections include the Compact Cane Collection (C126A), Tall Cane Collection (C126B), Brad Thompson Cane Collection (C126T), Rhizomatous Collection (C130), Miniature Rhizomatous Collection (C131), and Shrub-like Collection (C129), each offering three different varieties of the nursery’s choice. Gesneriads include Aeschynanthus (Lipstick Vines), Codonanthe, gloxinias, and African violet relatives, with cultivars such as Aeschynanthus ‘Big Apple’, ‘Fireworks’, Aeschynanthus pulcher, and Aeschynanthus gracilis in regular rotation. Hoyas and passionflowers round out the specialty vining plants, while the Rare Flowering Plants category spans Abutilon, Acalypha, Brugmansia, Brunfelsia, Buddleia, Fuchsia, Gardenia, Gingers, Hibiscus, Impatiens, Iochroma, Kalanchoe, Medinilla, Tibouchina, and many more subtropical and tropical ornamentals suited to container culture, terrariums, and indoor bonsai.

Ordering and Shipping

The nursery operates as a pure mail-order business without a walk-in retail display; visits are by appointment. All plants are shipped in 2½ to 3¾ inch pots as well-rooted cuttings or seed-grown starter plants, not as finished flowering specimens, allowing customers to grow them on. Orders ship via U.S. Postal Service Priority (Air) Mail, with shipping restricted to addresses within the United States; no international orders are accepted. Postage and packing is a flat $12.50 plus $2.00 per plant; processing typically takes about one week but may extend to four weeks during the busy spring season. Shipping is year-round to mild-winter areas of California and the southern and western states, while orders to cold-winter areas received after mid-October are held and shipped the following spring, with customers initialing a risk-acceptance note.

Cultural Information and Growing Philosophy

Each listing in the catalog includes a detailed cultural description and culture codes: (B) hanging basket, (D) dwarf under 12 inches, (F) fluorescent light culture, (H) humid conditions, (M) miniature under 6 inches, (T) terrarium plant, (W) winter flowering. General cultural guidelines: all flowering plants need some direct sunlight, while begonias and most gesneriads prefer only a few hours of direct sun or bright filtered light, especially in summer; insufficient light is the primary cause of poor growth and lack of bloom. Aim for at least 50% relative humidity, supplemented by pebble trays and regular misting with tepid water. Ideal temperatures are 55°F nights and 75°F days for most begonias and subtropicals, with a 65°F night minimum for most gesneriads and true tropicals. Water thoroughly from the top only when the growing medium becomes fairly dry, never letting plants stand in water. Fertilize lightly and frequently with a balanced formula. Many of the plants are recommended for terrarium, indoor bonsai, and small-space container gardening, with cold-hardiness figures in the listings serving as minimum-temperature guidance only.
