Tsunul

Planet Healers is an eco-education organization based in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, co-founded in 2015 by Canadian ecologist Paul Morris (MSc, CERP) and Mexican agronomist Sophia Ortiz. The organization exists to share the knowledge, practice, and presence that make ecological restoration something ordinary people can do, wherever they are.
The Planet Healer Path
Planet Healers has developed a five-stage learning journey — The Planet Healer Path — that guides practitioners from first awakening to deep restoration practice. Stage One, Awakening: the feeling arrives and does not leave — recognizing what is being lost and feeling the pull toward action. Stage Two, Ecological Literacy: learning to read the land, understanding soil tests, succession stages, and species relationships. Stage Three, Restoration Practice: doing real work on the ground — planting, testing, monitoring, and embodying the knowledge through direct experience. Stage Four, Teaching: transmitting what the land has taught you by designing workshops, mentoring others, and building community. Stage Five, Building: creating something that outlasts you — an institution, a reserve, or a community of practice.
Tsunul Reserve and Field Programs
Tsunul Reserve spans 39 hectares in the Yucatán Peninsula. In 2015, this was a compacted cattle ranch with invasive grasses, no native canopy, and no soil biology. Today it is a recovering tropical dry forest with documented populations of ocelot, coati, grison, and the near-threatened Ocellated Turkey present every morning of every month. The cenote holds five rare endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Soil organic matter in the food forest has risen significantly, the Collared Forest Falcon is nesting in the cave above the underground water, and over 80 bird species have been documented. Field programs include the five-day Fundamentals Field Intensive, three-to-seven-night Skill Stays, and one-to-six-month Internships and Apprenticeships.
Online Courses and Resources
Planet Healers offers extensive online learning resources, including the free Planet Healer Path guide, Fundamentals of Ecosystem Restoration, Reading Your Landscape, and Species Identification Starter Guide. Paul Morris also teaches the Introduction to Ecosystem Restoration course via Ecosystem Restoration Communities and the Soil Food Web School. All programs use a sliding scale pricing model, with financial assistance available for those who need it.
