FTD by Design

《兰花的类型:视觉纲要》(Types of Orchids: A Visual Compendium)是 FTD by Design 博客中介绍兰科植物分类的科普文章。

Company History and the FTD Florist Network

FTD was founded on August 18, 1910, in Downers Grove, Illinois (originally based in Detroit, Michigan, then Southfield, before the current headquarters) when thirteen florists met at the Seneca Hotel in Rochester, New York, and agreed to exchange out-of-town orders by telegraph under the name “Florists’ Telegraph Delivery.” In 1914 the company adopted the Mercury figure, a sixteenth-century Flemish sculpture by Giambologna, as its Mercury Man corporate logo to signal the speed of delivery. Today the company is owned by Nexus Capital Management and still routes orders through the Mercury Network, working with more than 30,000 member florists in over 125 countries to handle same-day local delivery across North America and Europe.

Sub-Brands ProFlowers and ProPlants

ProFlowers is FTD’s online fresh-flower retail brand, offering seasonal bouquets, roses, lilies, orchids and other categories with same-day or scheduled delivery across most U.S. states. ProPlants extends the same e-commerce model to indoor houseplants and small potted greens, shipping monstera, orchids, succulents and similar plants through partner florists or company-run fulfilment to the customer’s door, and shares the same account system as ProFlowers.

The FTD by Design Blog and Horticultural Content

FTD by Design is FTD’s in-house floral and gardening blog. It publishes plant guides covering bouquets, rose care, lilies, orchids, cacti, succulents and desert plants, alongside flower-arrangement tutorials and seasonal trend pieces. The blog serves both as a discovery resource for new plant owners and as a content-marketing channel for the parent brand.

The Orchids Visual Compendium Article

“Types of Orchids: A Visual Compendium” is one of the more detailed plant guides on the FTD by Design blog. It walks readers through the five subfamilies of Orchidaceae — Cypripedioideae, Vanilloideae, Orchidoideae, Epidendroideae and Apostasioideae — explains the most common tribes and genera under each, and provides a photo-driven compendium of more than 100 orchid genera, helping readers see how the orchids in their backyard, on a neighbour’s windowsill or in a florist’s cooler are related to one another.

American Native Orchids and Over 100 Local Genera

The article closes by listing more than 100 orchid genera that occur in or are commonly kept in the United States. It mixes well-known tropicals such as Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Dendrobium and Paphiopedilum with native terrestrial orchids like Spiranthes, Calopogon, Platanthera and Isotria. For hobbyist gardeners, this final section works as a beginner’s field guide to North American orchid diversity.

FTD’s Consumer Shopping Sites and Flower-Ordering Portals

FTD currently runs two dedicated consumer shopping sites: FTD.com is the official digital front door to the Mercury Network, offering roses, lilies, orchids, holiday gift baskets and same-day local florist delivery, available at https://www.ftd.com/ ; ProFlowers.com is the direct-to-consumer e-commerce brand FTD brought in during 2014, focused on gift-box fresh flowers and seasonal bouquets, and ProPlants is ProPlants’ indoor-houseplant collection under the ProFlowers umbrella, carrying monstera, orchids, succulents and other potted plants at https://www.proflowers.com/ with the ProPlants range at https://www.proflowers.com/plants/proplants-collection . The two stores share FTD’s group account system, Mercury Network fulfilment and the same floral brand assets, so membership, marketing email and holiday scheduling stay consistent across both sites.
