Nursery Background
Herman Geers Nursery (Kwekerij Herman Geers), located in Boskoop, South Holland, the Netherlands, is a fifth-generation family-run Handelskwekerij (commercial nursery). The family’s roots in Boskoop’s renowned nursery district reach back to the founder’s father and grandfather, who originally grew deciduous azaleas (Azalea mollis), shrubs, and conifers. Today Herman Geers himself runs the nursery, specializing in dwarf and miniature plants (dwerg- en miniatuurplanten) and is widely regarded as a representative small specialist nursery for this niche across Europe.
Main Business
The nursery focuses on propagating and selling rare dwarf and miniature plants. Its main categories include conifers (Coniferen, covering more than 20 genera such as Abies, Picea, Pinus, Juniperus, Thuja, Ginkgo), ornamental shrubs (Heesters, with close to 50 genera including Acer, Rhododendron, Spiraea, Hamamelis, Viburnum), cacti and succulents (Cactus), edible plants (Eetbare planten), and XL large specimens. The catalogue is detailed down to species and cultivar level, with selections such as Spiraea japonica ‘Odessa’ distributed abroad through partners including Canada’s Bloomin’ Easy Plants.
Operations
The nursery launched its first website in 2010 and has since evolved into a fully-fledged webshop with fast shipping across Europe. In 2013 a modern Cabriolet greenhouse was added, doubling as both growing and sales space; it can be fully opened to mimic outdoor conditions and welcomes walk-in visitors. Retail is open to the public every Saturday 09:00-16:00, while weekday visits are by appointment. Visitors can also seek advice on planting and cultivar combinations during visits.
Community Engagement
From 2004 to 2019 the family nursery hosted an annual open day at the end of March or the beginning of April, drawing plant enthusiasts from across Europe — Scandinavia, Germany, Poland, France, Belgium, and beyond. For fifteen consecutive years the event brought together more than 20 stallholders with rare plants and in-person exchange, becoming a notable gathering for the European gardening community. The nursery continues to take part in domestic and international plant fairs to extend its reach.
International Cooperation
The nursery maintains long-standing partnerships with overseas growers such as Canada’s Bloomin’ Easy Plants. Several of its own selections are marketed abroad under partner branding — for example, Spiraea japonica ‘Odessa’ is sold in North America as Poprocks Petite. This collaboration reflects international recognition of the nursery’s breeding work and shares quality dwarf plants between European and North American gardening communities. Overall, Herman Geers Nursery is a distinctive small European specialist nursery combining family heritage, rare-plant breeding, and an international distribution network.
