History and Origins
The department’s roots reach back to the first horticulture classes taught on October 21, 1869 by Dr. Norton S. Townsend and Charles Bessey, and to 1877 when J.L. Budd was named Professor of Horticulture and Forestry and the first Department Chair, formally establishing horticulture as an independent discipline. The state’s horticultural story began even earlier, with Suel Foster founding the Fountain Hill Nursery in Bloomington (now Muscatine) in 1836; Iowa Agricultural College opened its doors in 1868, and the department has continued teaching and research without interruption since.
