历史沿革

苗圃规模与三大业务板块

玫瑰与铁线莲品类

History and Origins

Schmid Gartenpflanzen is a family-run nursery in Memmingen in the Allgäu region of Bavaria, Germany, now in the fourth generation of the Schmid family. Founded in 1896, the firm began as a general garden plant and supply business. Around its 1996 centenary, the current custodian sorting through old printed catalogues rediscovered the Alte Rosen — historic roses the nursery had once grown itself — and began propagating and cultivating a representative selection of its own. The catalogue then expanded to include David Austin English roses, modern shrub roses, climbers and selections from French breeders Delbard and Guillot, alongside patio and ground-cover roses for smaller spaces and full-size ramblers for larger gardens. A complete Clematis programme followed, and the nursery later partnered with the British rose grower Peter Beales to offer more than a thousand additional cultivars on a spring-and-autumn pre-order basis. The family firm still grows its container stock outdoors at Memmingen, propagating and selling under one roof — one of the few southern German nurseries working seriously with both roses and clematis.

Sites and Three Lines of Business

The nursery sits in Memmingen (Memmingen/Allgäu) in Bavaria, near the Baden-Württemberg border, running both an on-site sales area and a long-established web shop, the latter in operation since around 2000. Three lines of business share the same cultivation rhythm: rose and clematis retail and wholesale, mail-order of roses, clematis, supports and rose-care products, and a set of complementary services for retail customers such as border planning, container planting and local delivery. Container-grown plants are available year-round; bare-root roses ship from mid-October onward. The nursery is a member of the Bund deutscher Baumschulen e.V. (German Nurseries Association) and of the International Clematis Society (I.Cl.S.). Since 2025 it has paused on-site retail consultations; online orders can still be placed and collected as Abholung pickups, with the nursery notifying customers by email once plants are ready.

Rose and Clematis Range

The online rose catalogue lists around 1,092 currently available cultivars, with archive entries bringing the documented total to roughly 1,800. Own-root Stammsortiment stock runs alongside the Peter Beales partnership programme. The focus is on historic roses, climbers, ramblers and David Austin English roses, with modern shrubs, hybrid teas (Edelrosen), bed roses (Beetrosen), ground-cover and wild roses kept for naturalistic planting schemes. The archive is intentionally preserved so that old, no-longer-traded cultivars remain identifiable and discussable. The clematis list covers more than 400 cultivars from 18 botanical groups — the nursery’s second main line and a long-standing companion for roses. Plants ship as two-year-old, well-rooted 2-litre container stock at 40–100 cm, all grown outdoors in the Allgäu; clematis are grouped by botanical affinity rather than the simpler three-pruning-group system, with recommendations centred on Italian clematis (Clematis viticella), large-flowered hybrids, wild species and staudig (herbaceous) forms. Alongside the plants the nursery sells rose companions, metal supports (rose obelisks, arches and wall trellises), peat-free organic rose compost, rose fertiliser, horn shavings and soil activators.

Planting Guidance and Customer Service

A standing Pflege-Tipps section covers rose pruning, feeding and transplanting as well as clematis pruning, planting and overwintering, complemented by longer-form Magazin and Rosenwissen articles on cultivar background and history. The shop supports keyword search, colour filters and a “ready-to-ship” filter, making it practical to navigate the 1,800-rose archive. Customer enquiries and order support are handled through dedicated info and support addresses, with on-site pickup in Memmingen available to local customers outside Bavarian public holidays.
