Nursery History
Zeeuwse Rozentuin is a specialist rose nursery in Noord-Beveland, Zeeland, the Netherlands. It was founded in 1995 by Lenze Plass and his sister Claudia under the name Zeeuwse — after Zeeland, the province where it was established — while Rozentuin is simply Dutch for “rose garden”. Set near the village of Kats at the foot of the Zeelandbrug, the nursery covers about 2.5 hectares and concentrates on roses (Rosa) and clematis (Clematis), two of the most popular ornamental climbers and shrubs in temperate gardens.
Rose and Clematis Collection
The nursery holds more than 1000 rose varieties at any given time, ranging from old garden roses, modern English-style shrubs, ramblers and climbers, ground covers and miniatures to wild botanical roses, alongside over 120 clematis cultivars. Plants are organised along three lines — Modern, Klassiek-Oud and Wilde Botanische — and every variety spends at least two full growing seasons in the open ground before being offered for sale, so gardeners can judge real vigour, flowering and disease resistance.
From Bare-Root to Online Retail
From late October through April the nursery sells bare-root roses, the traditional European planting season when plants are dormant and root quickest; in summer it shifts to container-grown stock. The online shop keeps around 240 SKUs in regular rotation at https://www.zeeuwserozentuin.nl/, each with notes on breeder, year of introduction, height, flowering period and disease tolerance. Visitors who cannot decide between cultivars can write to sales@zeeuwserozentuin.nl and receive advice from the in-house rose team.
A Landscape Garden in Noord-Beveland, Zeeland
In early 2021 a new team took over the nursery from the Plass siblings and broadened the brand into the Zeeuwse Oase: a five-hectare landscape garden that is open to the public alongside the retail beds, with sunny perennial borders, sheltered tree groups, willow lanes and deliberately wild patches. Over 25 years the property has gone from around 20 breeding bird species in the 1990s to 55 today, with a marked increase in butterflies, pollinators and small mammals — the result of a near-zero pesticide regime and minimal pruning, the same philosophy that shapes the rose fields behind it.
Visiting the Nursery and Garden
The site sits a few minutes from the Zeelandbrug in the village of Kats, Zeeland, and is open to visitors Wednesday through Sunday year-round, with reduced hours in winter (November to March). The grounds host guided rose walks, themed horticultural events, summer art exhibitions and retreats, combining rose retail, variety conservation and garden tourism in one compact Zeeland destination.
