组织概况
澳大利亚与新西兰植物园协会(Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand,简称 BGANZ)是两国植物园与树木园领域的最高代表机构,2004 年在澳大利亚注册成立,目前由分布于澳大利亚大陆与新西兰南北岛的 90 多家植物园、树木园,以及 150 多个相关机构、动物园、苗圃、公园友邻会、地方议会组成。协会总部位于澳大利亚,日常工作由执行总裁负责,会员遍及塔斯曼海两岸的皇家植物园、城市植物园、专科植物园与高校实验园圃。
使命与职责
BGANZ 把植物园定位为应对生物多样性丧失、气候变化、粮食安全与有害生物管理的前沿机构,长期推动四项核心使命:为会员植物园提供信息交流与协调规划论坛;倡导提升植物园保护、研究、教育与展示方面的最佳实践标准;代表会员与政府、资助机构、行业组织对话,参与影响植物园发展的政策与立法制定;推动植物保护、园艺科普与社会文化项目。
会员构成与刊物
BGANZ 会员包括澳大利亚和新西兰的每一家注册植物园与树木园,以及众多大学、地方议会、苗圃、园艺培训机构和花园之友团体。协会自 2014 年起出版专业季刊《THE BOTANIC GARDENer》(《植物园丁》),每年两期,介绍园艺创新、迁地保护、科普教育、访客体验等领域的人物、项目与最佳实践,目前由编辑团队成员 Megan Porter 主管,稿件主要来自会员植物园的专业人员与志愿者。
重点工作
协会运营多个专业协作网络:植物园交流网络(BGANZ Botanic Gardens Engagement Network,简称 BGEN)负责科普教育与访客项目;树木栽培工作组(BGANZ ARBoriculture Group,简称 BARB)推动树木管理与保护;藏品与记录管理小组(BCARM)联合各园规范植物档案与数据库,并维护《Living Collections Toolkit》等工具。协会代表澳大利亚与新西兰植物园整体,与国际植物园保护联盟(BGCI)、新西兰初级产业部、Species360 等机构合作。
奖项、领导与未来方向
协会每年组织会员大会、专业发展资助与年度奖项,2024 年起设立专业发展奖(最高 2,000 澳元)与早期职业奖(最高 500 澳元),2025 年 11 月在堪培拉首次举办 BGANZ Industry Awards 五大行业奖,涵盖园艺、保护、教育、社区参与与可持续等方向;年度 Botanic Gardens Day 是面向公众的全国性庆祝活动,2024 年以 Grow Your Health Challenge 为主题联动各地植物园。协会现任董事会主席 Marianne Cullen,执行总裁 Cassandra Nichols 于 2023 年 10 月就任,前任主席 Hayley 与任职 11 年的前任执行总裁 Eamonn Flanagan 完成治理过渡,2024 年获澳大利亚税务局授予 Deductible Gift Recipient(DGR,可税前抵扣捐赠)资质,同步完成品牌视觉刷新,扩展与 Species360 Hortis 平台、Longwood Gardens Fellows Program 等机构的合作,继续为会员植物园提供数据、培训与政策支持。
About the Organisation
Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand (BGANZ) is the peak body representing botanic gardens across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Operating since 2004, the organisation is registered in Australia and brings together more than 90 botanic gardens and arboreta on both sides of the Tasman Sea, together with over 150 institutional and associate members that include zoos, councils, nurseries, universities, and friends-of-garden groups. Day-to-day operations are led by the Chief Executive Officer, working alongside a board chaired by Marianne Cullen.
Mission and Responsibilities
BGANZ recognises botanic gardens as a frontline response to biodiversity decline, climate adaptation, food security and pest management. The organisation provides a forum for information exchange and coordinated planning; promotes best-practice standards in horticulture, conservation, research, display and education; represents member gardens in policy and legislative discussions with governments and industry bodies; and supports programs that advance plant conservation, horticulture outreach and community cultural heritage.
Membership and Publications
Membership is open to every documented botanic garden and arboretum in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, together with allied institutions and individuals who share the vision. Since 2014 the association has published THE BOTANIC GARDENer magazine twice a year, profiling people, projects and ideas shaping the future of the sector. Articles come from members across the network, covering horticulture, conservation, education, visitor engagement and garden management, and are coordinated by editor Megan Porter.
Key Programs and Networks
BGANZ runs several professional networks for its members: the Botanic Gardens Engagement Network (BGEN) supports education and visitor programming; BARB, the BGANZ ARBoriculture Group, advances tree management and conservation; the Collections and Records Management group (BCARM) coordinates standards for living collections, including the Living Collections Toolkit. The association also liaises with Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries, Species360 and other regional and international partners.
Awards, Leadership and Future Direction
The association runs an annual Professional Development Award of up to AU$2,000 and an Early Career Award of up to AU$500 for member staff, and in November 2025 launched the inaugural BGANZ Industry Awards in Canberra, covering horticulture, conservation, education, community engagement and sustainability; each year Botanic Gardens Day brings the network together, anchored in 2024 by the Grow Your Health Challenge. Current Chair Marianne Cullen and Chief Executive Officer Cassandra Nichols, who joined in October 2023, lead a board and team that secured Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status in 2024, completed a brand refresh, and renewed partnerships with Species360 Hortis and the Longwood Gardens Fellows Program, while continuing to invest in training, data standards and policy advocacy to support member gardens across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
