Overview
Nanling Botanical Garden was established in 1989, located in Luoxian Ridge area of Beihu District, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province (GPS: Luoxian Road 12). The garden operates under an integrated management system with Chenzhou Forestry Science Research Institute (founded in 1963). In 2009, it was approved by Hunan Provincial Forestry Department to hang the signboard of “Hunan Provincial Forest Botanical Garden Nanling Branch”, forming a management structure of “three signboards, one team”. The core management area covers 40.2 hectares with a forest coverage rate of 95%, known as the “Green Lung of Chenzhou”. As a comprehensive botanical garden integrating scientific research and tourism, its functions include forestry research, ex-situ plant conservation, technology extension, and science education.
Species Conservation
The garden has established a rare plant gene bank and ecological monitoring station, focusing on forest tree breeding and pest disease prevention research. It has collected and preserved over 1,800 species of plants native to the Nanling region, including 75 nationally and provincially protected plant species such as Cathaya argyrophylla (the “Panda of Plants”) and Metasequoia glyptostroboides (the “Living Fossil”). The garden also preserves various orchid (Orchidaceae) resources and rare tree species including Exbucklandia populnea, Manglietia fordiana, Manglietia insignis, Taiwania cryptomerioides, Nyssa sinensis, Ehretia thyrsiflora, and Sloanea sinensis. In 2024, a wild population of Calanthe sieboldii, a national first-level protected wild plant, was discovered here for the first time in Hunan Province.
Featured Landscape
The garden features four-season flower landscapes harmonizing with pristine forest ecological characteristics. In spring, tulip (Tulipa gesneriana) fields cover 8,000 square meters with 8 color ranges; the Yulan Avenue stretches 1.2 kilometers showcasing 6 varieties of magnolias. In autumn, the Sweetgum (Liquidambar formosana) forest covering 3.5 hectares creates a spectacular red foliage landscape. The garden includes 7 specialized gardens such as Rhododendron Garden and Cherry Garden, divided into three functional zones: scientific research and conservation area, specialized garden area, and public service area.
Research and Extension
The garden continuously strengthens the transformation of scientific and technological achievements through the integration of research and production. It implements the southern forest high-quality seedling rapid propagation technology project, promoting Eucalyptus improved varieties and high-yield Camellia oleifera clones. In 2024, the garden completed 12 seedling cultivation experiments and extended technology to 6 surrounding counties. Among 58 scientific staff, 2 have been recognized as municipal top talents, with 1 enjoying special allowances from the State Council.
Visitor Information
Nanling Botanical Garden is a free public park. City buses No. 8, 33, 62, and 701 provide direct access to the park entrance. After the 2025 public transit optimization, the peak-hour headway is reduced to 15 minutes. Relying on hilly landforms to form a natural ecological barrier, it is an ideal place for recreation and fitness for Chenzhou citizens. The 2025 survey shows 87% of visitors recognize the ecological environment quality. The garden is suitable for year-round visits.
