Zimtrade AS

Botanisk Verden / Zimtrade AS

Brand History and Heritage

Botanisk Verden / Zimtrade AS was founded in 1989 by Bjørn Inge Børve and his wife Elin in Norheimsund, Hardanger, on the west coast of Norway. The business took over a small garden centre run by the Zimmer family in nearby Uskedalen (close to Rosendal) and the Zimtrade mail-order bulb catalogue that came with it, which already served around 2,500 regular customers. The new owners kept the Zimtrade name and grew it into one of Norway’s first and largest mail-order plant companies. In 1994 the company launched the zimtrade.no web shop, one of Norway’s earliest e-commerce experiments, partly supported by the national postal service Posten during the start-up phase. Early orders still came in by phone, telefax and reply coupons, and the whole family spent long evenings opening the thousands of envelopes each season. In May 2021, the founders’ daughter Elise Børve took over the operation and relocated the business from Hardanger to Ski in Akershus county, about 24 km south of Oslo, where a new purpose-built warehouse with climate-controlled storage for bulbs, seeds and plants now supports the online shop.

Core Range and Product Structure

The shop specialises in unusual and hard-to-find varieties that are often only sold to professional growers through European wholesale channels. The catalogue covers flower and vegetable seeds, spring- and autumn-flowering bulbs (summer bulbs such as dahlia, gladiolus, begonia and canna, plus autumn bulbs such as tulip, hyacinth, crocus, fritillaria, allium, anemone and ranunculus), bare-root and potted perennials, and a selection of ornamental shrubs and small fruiting plants. Founder Bjørn Inge trained as a gartner (horticulturist) and anleggsgartner (landscape gardener) and travels regularly to the Netherlands to visit breeders and propagators, maintaining multi-generational relationships with several family-run suppliers; this access allows the company to bring European professional-grade selections into the Norwegian retail market. Orders ship anywhere in Norway, with free delivery on purchases over NOK 1,500, and each consignment is hand-checked at the Ski warehouse and packed in protective packaging designed for live plant material.

Membership and Service System

Private customers aged 16 and over can join the Botanisk Hageklubb (Botanical Garden Club) loyalty programme free of charge. Logged-in members receive a 15% shopping discount, bonus points on every purchase, printed catalogues by post, seasonal promotional emails and a regular newsletter with gardening advice. Customer service covers pre-purchase plant selection advice, order tracking, post-delivery quality feedback, extended absence delivery arrangements and competition rules. A separate newsletter subscription offers new arrivals, seasonal planting reminders and limited-time discounts, while many long-time customers still prefer to order by phone, a tradition that has carried over from the catalogue era.

Technical Writing and Educational Outreach

The company publishes original Norwegian-language gardening articles on its blog. Published pieces cover winter sowing (vintersåing) and perennial seed-starting technique, tuber treatment for ranunculus and anemone, the genus Iris (over 300 species, including bulbous and rhizomatous forms) with cultivation guidance for Norwegian conditions, and seasonal to-do calendars for perennials. Each article is written by the in-house horticultural team with attention to local climate variables such as frost dates, snow cover, late-spring cold snaps and the hardiness range from coastal H2 inland. Customers are also invited to share their own garden photos through the Del dine bilder med oss (Share your pictures with us) section, which has built up a small but steady stream of customer-grown variety feedback.

Location and Operational Facilities

The current head office and warehouse are located at Glynitveien 27, 1400 Ski, in Akershus county, Norway. The building combines office space with purpose-built storage rooms for bulbs, seeds and young plants, with humidity and temperature control to keep stock in good condition through the Norwegian winter. The registered company number is Org. nr. 985884439. The founders’ own established garden overlooking the Hardangerfjord continues to serve as a long-term trial plot for many of the varieties sold in the shop, giving the team first-hand data on how selections perform in the cool, wet coastal climate of western Norway. Botanisk Verden / Zimtrade AS remains a family-run mail-order and online horticultural business, one of the few in Norway to span the full arc from printed catalogue to mobile commerce.
