协会概况与创立背景
英国耐寒植物协会 Hardy Plant Society 是英国本土最具代表性的耐寒园艺植物科普与保护组织之一, 总部位于英格兰西部城镇 Evesham, 由已故著名耐寒植物专家 Alan Bloom 与三位志同道合的园艺家于上世纪五十年代共同发起, 旨在为园艺爱好者提供耐寒植物相关知识的共享与传播平台, 当前注册会员覆盖英国本土并延伸至欧洲其他地区, 由志愿者驱动的非营利园艺科普机构运营至今。

About the Society
The Hardy Plant Society is a UK-based charitable organisation dedicated to hardy garden plants, founded in the late 1950s by Alan Bloom together with three fellow enthusiasts. Headquartered in Evesham in the English West Midlands, the Society brings together amateur gardeners, specialist plant growers and horticulture professionals through local groups, special interest groups and a nationwide volunteer network, all sharing knowledge on resilient perennial and hardy garden species.
Membership and Governance
The Society is run by a Board of Trustees with an Administrator coordinating day-to-day work from its Evesham office, supported by hundreds of volunteers across the United Kingdom. Members gain access to the Plant Library of more than twelve thousand digital images, the Seed Distribution Scheme offering over fifteen hundred seed varieties annually, the Conservation Scheme focused on preserving rarer garden-worthy cultivars, and discounted rates for students studying horticulture. The current Honorary President is the renowned plantsman Roy Lancaster.
Publications and the Conservation Scheme
Three regular publications accompany the Society’s work: The Hardy Plant journal, the Newsletter distributed to members, and Cornucopia, a curated compilation drawn from local and special interest group writing. The Conservation Scheme maintains a living library of older or less well-known hardy garden plants, propagating and distributing cultivars that might otherwise disappear from cultivation, while the Seed Distribution Scheme channels home-saved seed from members back into wider circulation.
Special Interest and Local Groups
Specialist communities within the Society focus on genera and growing conditions including Galanthus, Hardy Geranium, Peony, Pulmonaria, Ranunculaceae, Variegated Plants, and Shade and Woodland plants, each maintained by volunteer convenors. Alongside these national groups, numerous Local Groups meet across the United Kingdom for talks, plant sales, garden visits and study days, providing the regular in-person contact that remains central to the Hardy Plant Society experience.
Research, Bursaries and Wider Influence
Through the Kenneth Black Bursary Scheme the Society funds horticulture students and early-career practitioners, while the Plant Library and the Society’s published record offer a long-running historical archive of hardy plant cultivation in Britain. Working alongside partner gardens and institutions, the Hardy Plant Society continues to play a recognised role in the conservation, study and popular appreciation of hardy garden plants across the United Kingdom and beyond.
