Lael’s Moon Garden Nursery is a family-run outdoor hardy plant nursery located near Rochester, Washington, founded in 1999 by Larry and Bethany Lael with the long-term slogan “Plant Your Own Eden.” The nursery supplies Pacific Northwest gardeners with hardy ornamentals, edible landscaping plants and professional garden planning services, supported by an extensive display and test garden on site.
History and Scale
The nursery began as a one-person operation led by Larry, with Bethany assisting on weekends while continuing her Washington State government career. Within a few years Bethany joined full time after the couple purchased the inventory of the nearby Riverside Nursery and relocated the business to their own farm. Over more than two decades it has grown into a mid-sized outdoor nursery with five full-time horticulture and management staff, stocking well over one thousand varieties of ornamental trees, shrubs, edibles and selected perennials.

The nursery maintains more than one thousand hardy outdoor plants including shade trees, fruit and nut trees, flowering trees, over sixty Japanese maple varieties, conifers (with an emphasis on dwarf forms), dogwoods, berry and small fruits, weeping and sculpted specimens, Pacific Northwest natives, rock-garden plants, bamboo and bonsai. Perennials are carefully selected for the local maritime climate and the nursery deliberately avoids annuals, holding to the philosophy that good plants return each year. A plant-locator service is offered for hard-to-source hardy varieties.
Services and Garden Planning
Available services include local plant delivery, garden planning and landscape design, wholesale plant sales for landscapers and builders, and recycling of returned plastic pots. The on-site display garden is organized to answer the three most frequent customer questions: how big it gets, whether it survives locally, and whether it belongs in the user’s own garden.
