Platform Background

Tuinaannemer.be is a Flemish-regional gateway that connects household garden owners in Belgium with registered local garden contractors, designers and tree-care specialists. The platform was launched by VLAM, the Flemish Centre for Agro- and Fisheries Marketing, in the late 1990s so that owners do not have to rely on scattered advertisements when looking for qualified help. The site is built around the idea that a garden, from initial design through long-term upkeep, should be guided by a single professional contractor. The interface is in Dutch.

Service Scope and Four Core Trades

The platform groups contractor services into four trades. The first is advice, where a contractor helps owners choose plants that suit a modern or rural garden, plan more shade, or design a sustainable rooftop terrace. The second is design, taking a project from an exploratory conversation to a complete garden plan that may include a terrace, a pond or a swimming pond (zwemvijver). The third is realisation, where the contractor physically implements the agreed plan, including a new swimming pond or a sustainable rooftop terrace. The fourth is maintenance, covering aeration, pruning and professional tree care (boomverzorging) on a regular schedule, with the right tools and trained staff.

Companion Content and Community

Alongside the contractor directory, the site maintains a monthly gardening calendar (Tuinkalender) tuned to Flemish climate conditions, with concrete suggestions for each month of the year. It also runs an ideas section (Tuinideeën) covering compact gardens, vegetable and herb gardens, planting choices for sites with a high water table, and low-maintenance layouts, alongside the podcast Tour de Tuin and the gardening TV programme Van Droom tot Tuin.

Annual Competition and Industry Recognition

Every year the platform cooperates with the Flemish garden-contractor sector to organise De Vlaamse Tuinaannemer, an annual professional competition for contractors. The competition has been running since 1996, and 2026 marks its 30th edition. An independent expert jury scores the submitted projects on craftsmanship, finished quality and sustainability. There is also a GroenGek(l)eurd label aimed at contractors under thirty or businesses that have been active for at most five years, encouraging younger practitioners to publish their work.

Operating Body and Organizational Structure

The platform is operated entirely by VLAM vzw. VLAM itself was established as a Flemish government agency on 22 September 1994, with the mission of marketing Flemish agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and agri-food products. It is headquartered in Brussels and runs as an externally autonomous agency of the Flemish government. Tuinaannemer.be sits within VLAM’s ornamental-horticulture and green-sector portfolio, and the contractors listed on the platform are VLAM members who pay an annual fee in exchange for a public profile on the site.
