Firm Background and Founders
Ocean Road Landscaping was founded in 1995 in Anglesea, Victoria by Peter Shaw and his wife Simone Shaw, taking its name from the nearby Great Ocean Road. Before launching the practice, Peter worked as a trained greenkeeper who steadily built a sideline in residential landscaping; when he and Simone reviewed the books together they realised that the gardening work had grown beyond his turf role, and they turned that “obvious career move” into the business the firm is today. Over three decades the company has expanded into a multidisciplinary team of 15 landscape architects, landscape professionals and horticulturists, with Peter driving the design language and Simone overseeing client communication, project coordination and team culture. The practice is deeply rooted in coastal Victoria, serving clients along the Great Ocean Road, in Geelong, on the Surf Coast and across the Bellarine Peninsula, and is a regular contributor to ABC Gardening Australia and the Dig radio program.
Core Services and Project Portfolio
Ocean Road Landscaping offers four integrated service lines — Consult, Design, Construct and Nurture — covering consultation, landscape design, hard and soft construction, irrigation, drainage, lighting, planting and ongoing garden maintenance. While coastal gardens remain its signature, the firm has delivered cottage, rural, Balinese, Japanese, child-friendly play, bird-attracting, frog bog and terraced gardens for clients from Lorne and Anglesea to Torquay, Ocean Grove and the Bellarine Peninsula, alongside a portfolio of school and kindergarten landscapes. The team supplies its own designers, construction crews and maintenance crews, giving clients a single accountable contact from the first site visit through decades of seasonal care. Its gardens have appeared in 100 Australian Gardens and Landscapes, Better Homes and Gardens, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian, The Design Files, The Plant Hunter, Wonderground Press and My Coastal Home.
Awards and Media Recognition
Ocean Road Landscaping has been a regular on the Landscaping Victoria Awards and Geelong Business Excellence Awards honour rolls since 2010. In 2025 the firm won two golds — Softscaping in the Landscape for the Fairhaven project and Creative Non-Built Landscape Design for the Warnambool project — plus a silver for the Fairhaven #2 project; in 2023 it collected two golds (Landscape Design Over 400m² and Sustainable Landscape), three silvers (Landscape Design 100m²–400m², Feature in the Landscape and Residential Landscape Construction A$75–150k) and one bronze (Residential Landscape Construction up to A$75k). Earlier honours include a 2016 Landscaping Victoria commendation, 2015 Geelong Business Excellence Awards Hall of Fame induction, 2014 Geelong Advertiser Human Resources Award, 2011 Small Business Award, 2010 Hard Surfaces in the Landscape gold, and 2005 Landscape Victoria finalist listings. The firm’s gardens have also been featured on ABC Gardening Australia and in a 2022 Better Homes and Gardens magazine and TV story on Peter Shaw.
Service Areas and Design Philosophy
The firm works primarily across the Geelong region, Surf Coast Shire and Bellarine Peninsula, with regular projects extending to Lorne and Apollo Bay. Coastal exposure, salt spray, steep sites and windy conditions define the brief, and Peter Shaw’s design response is to read each site carefully — its slope, soil, sun, wind and existing plantings — and to specify native and climate-adapted plants that will mature into resilient, low-input gardens. The studio’s design process moves from on-site consultation and base-map preparation through concept sketches, planting plans, hard-surface detailing and irrigation zoning to a final master plan, followed by construction and ongoing maintenance so the original design intent survives the decades. Ocean Road Landscaping emphasises future-proof layouts that reserve space for pools, vegetable gardens or play areas the family may add later, and supplies plant material at trade prices to keep ambitious gardens within reach.
Industry Position and Community Engagement
Over thirty years in Anglesea, Ocean Road Landscaping has built a portfolio that blends coastal horticultural expertise, construction craft and long-term stewardship, and is widely recognised as one of Victoria’s most awarded boutique landscape practices. Its gardens — including Sunnymeade, Jamboree and the Fairhaven estate — have opened for Open Gardens Victoria, and Peter and Simone Shaw regularly speak at industry events, on radio and in print to share their approach to working with nature rather than against it. The company operates from Anglesea on Victoria’s surf coast, where the office, yard and on-site consultation service support a steady flow of residential and small commercial clients, while the official website provides the most current details on visiting, booking consultations and engaging the firm’s landscape architects, horticulturists and construction crews.
