Institutional Background and History
The USDA PLANTS Database is the standardized national plant information catalog maintained by the National Plant Data Team (NPDT) within the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture. The database traces its roots to the National List of Scientific Plant Names published by the Soil Conservation Service in 1971 and revised in 1982, which originated the PLANTS Symbol naming convention still in use. It was launched online in the late 1990s and has continued to operate under the NRCS East National Technology Support Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Data Scope and Coverage
PLANTS covers vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens across all 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and other U.S. territories. Earlier public snapshots of the underlying checklist counted roughly 90,000 species and infraspecific records, while the image gallery has grown past 50,000 photographs. Each plant profile includes the PLANTS Symbol, scientific and common names, distribution by state, species abstracts, characteristics, images, and references.
Search Tools and Methods
The database offers specialized searches by name, plant symbol, characteristics, duration, growth habit, group, wetland indicator status, rarity, state distribution, and invasive or noxious status. The Characteristic Search engine maps against more than 80 NRCS conservation plant characteristics and supports JSON or CSV export for downstream analysis by ecologists, consultants, and students.
Technical Partnerships and Team
PLANTS is led by the National Plant Data Team (NPDT) within the NRCS, working alongside the NRCS Information Technology Center (ITC), the National Information Technology Center (NITC), and partners including BLM, USFS, USFWS, ARS, and APHIS. The team draws on specialists in plant taxonomy, forestry, plant physiology, range science, ethnobotany, ecology, and taxonomic database development, with contributions from state natural heritage networks and botanical institutions.
Applications and Public Value
PLANTS supports federal and state land conservation, vegetation restoration planning, agriculture and forestry decisions, invasive species alerts, endangered species assessments, horticultural identity verification, and citizen science education. By offering a single national standard for plant naming and distribution, PLANTS reduces duplication across agencies and disciplines and remains a free public reference for researchers, educators, gardeners, conservationists, and farmers.
