Mission and History of the CSSA
The Cycad Society of South Africa (CSSA, Afrikaans: Broodboomvereniging van Suid-Afrika) frames its work around three themes — Knowledge, Conservation and Protection — and welcomes hobbyists, researchers and conservation professionals who are interested in cycads. Members participate through branch meetings, field trips, legal seed and seedling exchange, and the society’s journal.
Council Structure and Branches
The CSSA Council consists of a President, Secretary/Treasurer, Editor, Media-Liaison Officer and Webmaster, with regional representatives drawn from each branch. The branch network currently spans nine South African provinces — Gauteng (Central Branch), North West, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Western Cape and Eastern Cape — plus an International Correspondents channel for members and partner organisations abroad. The KwaZulu-Natal branch has published its 2026 annual programme of meetings at Cato Ridge, field trips to the Eastern Cape, member garden visits in Durban, PMB and Kloof, and a year-end function.
Journal Encephalartos and Academic Publishing
The society’s journal, Encephalartos, takes its name from the genus Encephalartos. Recent issues have featured natural habitat photographs such as a steep rocky slope at Tunnel Creek National Park in the King Leopold Ranges of Western Australia (Cycas pruinosa, Issue 135, March 2019). CSSA members have also contributed research articles to Veld & Flora Vol. 102 (1) and (2), covering the conservation status of South African cycads (Tess Rayner & Adam Pires) and DNA-barcode identification of cycad species (Janice Williamson, Herman van der Bank and colleagues).
Conservation Research and Species Inventory
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports that the order Cycadales is the most threatened plant group in the world. The society maintains an annotated species list of 37 Encephalartos taxa, each tagged with an IUCN Red List category (Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened, Least Concern and so on), including Encephalartos woodii — a flagship species extinct in the wild and maintained only through cloned individuals. Stangeria eriopus (Natal grass cycad) is also listed as a flagship subject for South African cycad conservation.
Membership and Public Engagement
The 2022 membership schedule distinguishes local South African members, Southern African neighbours (Namibia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, etc.) and foreign members. Local full members pay R360 (postal) or R250 (electronic); student members pay R250/R100. Southern African members pay R480/R450. Foreign members pay in US dollars (US$50–65), Australian dollars (AU$51–67), euros (€42–49) or pounds sterling (£40–44) depending on delivery method. Overseas enquiries are routed through correspondents based in Florida and Australia; the general contact email and office phone are listed on the official Contact Us page.
