馆藏发展与历史沿革
米勒图书馆的前身可追溯至华盛顿公园树木园至少在1946年建立的馆藏。1968年树木园会所火灾进一步凸显永久馆舍的必要性。图书馆于1985年在华盛顿大学城市园艺中心开放，汇集树木园与大学珍本部门约2000册图书；1988年，伊丽莎白·米勒捐资扩建馆舍并设立人员与馆藏基金。
太平洋西北园艺馆藏
其核心特色是太平洋西北联系馆藏，涵盖区域园艺、园艺学、本土植物、生态系统与生境，也收藏与本地气候和栽培条件相近地区的植物与花园资料。全馆现有逾16000册图书、逾200种在订期刊及600余种历年期刊题名，并保存十七至十九世纪古籍、苗圃目录、档案、地图、学位论文与多媒体资料。
园艺问答与主题资源
图书馆把实体馆藏转化为可检索的公共知识服务。园艺问答知识库收录参考馆员回答的900余个问题，并提供60余项工具、书评和栽培提示；主题园艺资源按高山与岩石园艺、球根、蕨类、本土植物、病虫害、繁殖、修剪、可持续园艺、城市农业等方向整理书籍、期刊文章与网络资料。
教学研究与公众借阅
图书馆服务华盛顿大学植物园的研究和教学，也免费向公众开放馆内使用。注册后无需大学隶属关系即可借阅符合条件的资料。馆内为学生提供目录、学术数据库、同行评议期刊与引文工具，同时设有面向儿童、家长和教师的自然教育馆藏，连接专业研究、园艺实践与公众学习。
社区合作与文化项目
图书馆由华盛顿大学与太平洋西北园艺社群共同支持，形成长期公私合作。除参考咨询和植物问答外，还开展故事时间、艺术展览、园艺讲座与专题书目服务。志愿者参与上架、数据录入和专题项目，使这座专业馆藏持续服务研究人员、园艺从业者、家庭园丁与青少年读者。
Collection Development and History
The library traces its roots to an Arboretum collection documented by at least 1946. The 1968 fire that destroyed the Arboretum Clubhouse underscored the need for a secure permanent facility. The Elisabeth C. Miller Library opened at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture in 1985 with about 2,000 books consolidated from the Arboretum and the university’s Rare Books Department. Elisabeth C. Miller funded a major expansion and an endowment in 1988.
Pacific Northwest Horticultural Collections
Its defining strength is the Pacific Northwest Connections collection, covering regional gardening, horticulture, native plants, ecosystems, and habitats, together with comparable climate regions around the world. The wider holdings include more than 16,000 books, over 200 active periodical subscriptions, more than 600 periodical titles, seventeenth- to nineteenth-century works, nursery catalogs, archives, maps, student theses, and audiovisual resources.
Gardening Answers and Topic Guides
The library extends its collections through public digital reference services. The Gardening Answers Knowledgebase contains more than 900 questions answered by reference staff, along with over 60 garden tools, reviews, and growing tips. Gardening by Topic guides connect readers with books, articles, handouts, and web resources on subjects ranging from alpine gardening and native plants to propagation, pruning, sustainable design, urban farming, and plant health.
Research, Learning, and Public Access
The Miller Library supports research and teaching across the University of Washington Botanic Gardens while remaining open to the public without charge. Visitors may use all collections on site, and registered borrowers do not need a university affiliation. Research support includes catalogs, scholarly databases, peer-reviewed journal guidance, and citation tools, complemented by youth and parent-teacher collections that connect horticultural science with community education.
Community Partnership and Programs
The library reflects a longstanding public-private partnership between the University of Washington and the Pacific Northwest gardening community. Reference services, the Plant Answer Line, story programs, art exhibitions, lectures, and curated bibliographies broaden access to horticultural knowledge. Volunteer work in shelving, data entry, and special projects further supports researchers, horticultural professionals, home gardeners, families, and young readers.
